Description

Emergency Veterinarian

Build an ER career you can actually sustain.

You love emergency medicine. You'd also like to still love it 10 years from now.

At Animal Emergency & Referral Center of Minnesota (AERC), many of our senior Emergency Veterinarians have spent 10, 15, even 20+ years practicing ER medicine. That's unusual in this field, and we're proud of it.

It says something important about what we've built: a place where you can practice challenging medicine, earn a good living, continue developing as a doctor—and still have a life outside the hospital.

We're looking for an Emergency Veterinarian who wants to build that kind of career with us.

This Isn't urgent care; you'll practice real emergency and critical care medicine here.

AERC is a large, collaborative emergency and specialty hospital. You'll evaluate and stabilize critically ill patients, manage complicated hospitalized cases, perform emergency procedures, work through challenging diagnostics, and collaborate on cases that don't always have an easy answer.

And when you need another perspective, you have one.

You'll work alongside experienced senior ER doctors, criticalists, and specialists across multiple disciplines. Our doctors discuss cases, teach each other, and collaborate across services.

If you're earlier in your ER career, you aren't simply handed a shift and expected to sink or swim. If you're experienced, you'll have colleagues who can challenge you and help you continue growing.

We aren't looking to churn through patients—or veterinarians. We want doctors who are interested in practicing excellent medicine and continuing to get better at it.

Actual Work-Life Balance. Not the Recruiting Version.

Every veterinary hospital talks about work-life balance.

We think longevity is better evidence.

AERC has senior ER veterinarians who have practiced emergency medicine here for 10–20+ years. We've built schedules, staffing, and a culture designed to make a long-term career in emergency medicine possible.

ER will always be ER. Some shifts are hard. Some cases follow you home in your head. We're not going to pretend otherwise.

But a demanding career shouldn't require sacrificing the rest of your life—and you shouldn't have to choose between sustainability and earning a strong salary.

You Won't Practice Medicine on an Island

Emergency medicine is unpredictable. Your support system shouldn't be.

Our Emergency Veterinarians work alongside skilled Licensed Veterinary Technicians, Veterinary Assistants, Technician Assistants, and other support team members who understand emergency medicine.

You'll also have access to specialists, advanced diagnostics, surgery, imaging, and critical care expertise within the hospital.

We want our doctors practicing medicine, leading their patient-care teams, and using the people and resources around them—not trying to do every task themselves.

Your Medicine Is Still Yours

AERC is independently and locally owned.

There isn't a corporate office several states away telling you how many patients you need to see or sending directives about how you should practice medicine.

The people making decisions about AERC work at AERC.

That doesn't mean there aren't standards, accountability, budgets, or expectations. Of course there are. But medical decisions are driven by the patient, the client, and the professionals caring for them—not by instructions from executives in California.

For veterinarians who value professional autonomy, that distinction matters.

The Medicine Matters. So Does the Communication.

Emergency medicine involves people as much as patients.

You'll help clients understand what's happening, what you recommend, what it may cost, and what they can expect next. You'll guide people through straightforward decisions and some extraordinarily difficult ones.

We're looking for someone who can be clear without being cold, compassionate without avoiding hard conversations, and comfortable partnering with clients to determine the right plan for their pet and family.

You'll also collaborate with referring veterinarians and AERC specialists to provide continuity of care when patients move between services or return to their primary veterinarian.
