Job Summary
The Application DBA manages database administration tasks including setup, object maintenance, backup, recovery, and performance monitoring. This role involves database design review, SQL tuning, and documentation, with opportunities to expand into consultancy areas like performance tuning and data governance.
Responsibilities
- Migrate data from Mainframe DB2 on z/OS to flat files using scripts or tools in the mainframe environment to ensure accurate data transfer
- Plan and execute database migration projects to meet business requirements and minimize downtime
- Monitor database performance and availability proactively; implement corrective actions to optimize system reliability
- Track service levels, document database configurations, and provide regular performance and availability reports to stakeholders
- Ensure databases meet agreed service levels; develop and implement action plans to address any gaps
- Lead database operations following standard operating procedures to maintain consistency and quality
- Implement service continuity measures including backup, restore procedures, and disaster recovery plans to support uninterrupted business operations
- Define and enforce data governance policies related to database management, including permission controls, hardening standards, and naming conventions
- Stay updated on emerging database technologies to recommend improvements and innovations
- Collaborate with application teams to review and enhance database design, aligning data models with business and application needs
- Develop and enforce standards and procedures for database environments to ensure compliance and best practices
- Communicate technical database design rationales and issues effectively to customers and stakeholders
- Educate application teams on best practices for coding and database design to improve application performance and maintainability
- Share knowledge and lessons learned through Communities of Practice (CoPs) or internal forums to foster organizational learning
- Contribute to the knowledge repository by documenting experiences and insights gained from project implementations
Required competencies and certifications
- Minimum 4 years of experience in Mainframe DB2 on z/OS database administration
- Proven expertise in database design, implementation, and operational support for Mainframe DB2 on z/OS
- Experience migrating data from Mainframe DB2 on z/OS to flat files using scripts or tools within the mainframe environment
Preferred competencies and qualifications
- Knowledge and experience with other database systems such as MS SQL Server or DB2 uDB
- Familiarity with cloud platforms such as AWS or Azure
