Endoscopy Technician

Summary

Assists surgeons and RNs during endoscopic procedures by preparing equipment, maintaining sterile fields, and providing physician support in a hospital Ambulatory Care/Surgical setting. Handles patient care, equipment cleaning, specimen transport, and works across all age groups from neonatal to geriatric.

The Endoscope Technician is responsible for assisting in provision of nursing care and preparation of the endoscopy patient in the Ambulatory Care Unit and/or Surgical Department. The Technician functions as a member of the procedure team in donning personal protective equipment (e.g. gown and gloves), preparing equipment and supplies for use in endoscopy procedures, providing the physician with necessary supplies and equipment during the procedure, cleaning and transporting equipment, and handling specimens collected during the procedure. The Endoscope Technician will deliver care in accordance to age specific categories i.e. neo-natal, pediatric, adolescent, adult and geriatric patients.

RESPONSIBILITIES (ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS):

  • Provides patient care under the direction of the surgeon and registered nurse (RN).
  • Protects patients and team members by adhering to infection-control policies and protocols.
  • Sets up and maintains sterile field.
  • Prepare the procedural suite and have all equipment/supplies/instruments ready for endoscopic procedures.
  • Performs gowning, gloving, and draping for all endoscopic cases.
  • Maintains focus and anticipate needs of physician during procedures.
  • Cleans procedural room and equipment per established policies.
  • Cleans and prepares endoscopic supplies and instruments for transportation to the decontamination area.
  • Demonstrates competency to transport or assist in the transportation of patents per departmental procedure.
  • Maintains patient confidence and protects operations by keeping information confidential.
  • Maintains a cooperative relationship among health care teams by communicating information and participating in team problem-solving method.
  • Regular attendance and punctuality for scheduled shifts.
  • Appropriately adapts assessment, treatment, and/or care methods to accommodate the physical, cultural, age-specific, and other developmental needs of each person served.
  • Maintains professional and technical knowledge through continuing education opportunities including internal and external educational offerings.
  • Utilization of assistive devices for lifting is mandatory.
  • Must adhere to safety protocols at all times.
  • Per DRH policy, all required conditions of employment must be met and maintained including required vaccinations.
  • This position requires respirator and fit testing. Required testing will be performed on all team members at risk for exposure to airborne infectious diseases, droplet producing procedures, or any caustic chemicals.

  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
