Engineer – Electrical Design – Data Centre

Summary

Designs and maintains high-reliability electrical systems for data centres, including power distribution, UPS, generators, and energy storage, ensuring uptime and efficiency.

The Engineer – Electrical Design – Data Centre is a full-time role based in Singapore or Indonesia (Batam).

The role reports to the Senior Manager – Data Centre.

Overview

The Engineer – Electrical Design is responsible for the design, technical governance and engineering support of electrical infrastructure across the company’s data centre portfolio. The role supports the full asset lifecycle – from concept design and construction through commissioning, operations, upgrades and capacity expansion – to ensure facilities meet the highest standards of availability, reliability, scalability, sustainability and operational efficiency.

Working closely with internal design, construction, operations and commissioning teams, the Engineer – Electrical Design will develop and review electrical engineering solutions that support mission-critical environments while ensuring compliance with company design standards and industry best practices.

Key responsibilities

  • Develop, review and approve electrical system designs for new data centre developments and major facility expansions.
  • Prepare and review engineering calculations, technical specifications, equipment schedules and design documentation.
  • Design and optimise mission-critical electrical infrastructure, including:
    • Utility service connections and substations.
    • Medium Voltage (MV) and Low Voltage (LV) distribution systems.
    • Power transformers.
    • Switchgear and switchboards
    • Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS) systems
    • Standby diesel generator systems.
    • Automatic Transfer Switches (ATS) and Static Transfer Switches (STS).
    • Busway systems and Power Distribution Units (PDUs).
    • Remote Power Panels (RPPs) and rack power distribution.
    • Earthing, bonding and lightning protection systems.
    • Lighting and emergency lighting systems.
  • Perform electrical load calculations, short circuit studies, protection coordination, voltage drop analysis, arc flash assessments and equipment sizing.
  • Evaluate emerging power technologies, including lithium-ion battery energy storage systems (BESS), renewable energy integration and grid-interactive solutions.
  • Develop standardised electrical design guidelines and engineering specifications across the data centre portfolio.

Design Review & Technical Governance

  • Review consultant and contractor designs to ensure compliance with company standards, project requirements and applicable codes.
  • Participate in design reviews, constructability reviews, value engineering and technical risk assessments.
  • Ensure electrical designs support maintainability, operational resilience, energy efficiency and future scalability.
  • Manage technical deviations and engineering change requests.

Project Delivery

  • Support project teams throughout design, procurement, construction, commissioning and handover.
  • Review technical submissions, vendor proposals, equipment selections and shop drawings.
  • Participate in Factory Acceptance Tests (FAT), Site Acceptance Tests (SAT), Integrated Systems Testing (IST) and commissioning activities.
  • Resolve complex electrical engineering issues during project execution.

Operations & Asset Lifecycle Support

  • Provide engineering support for operating data centres.
  • Evaluate electrical system performance and recommend improvements to reliability, capacity and energy efficiency.
  • Support root cause analysis (RCA) of electrical failures and develop corrective actions.
  • Plan infrastructure upgrades, equipment replacement and capacity expansion while maintaining operational continuity.
  • Collaborate with operations teams to optimise preventive maintenance strategies and improve asset reliability.

Sustainability & Innovation

  • Support initiatives to improve Power Usage Effectiveness (PUE), energy efficiency and overall facility sustainability.
  • Evaluate emerging electrical technologies, energy-efficient equipment, battery energy storage systems, renewable energy integration and digital engineering solutions.
  • Promote standardisation, automation and continuous improvement across the electrical engineering function.

Qualifications & experience

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering or equivalent.
  • Minimum 5 years of relevant experience in electrical design of mission‑critical facilities, with significant exposure to hyperscale or enterprise data centres.
  • Experience working for a data centre owner/operator, engineering consultancy or EPC contractor delivering large‑scale mission‑critical projects. Experience in the following matters would be a plus:
    • Utility interconnection and grid coordination.
    • High‑voltage (66‑230 kV) substations and transmission infrastructure.
    • Capacity planning for AI/HPC workloads (50‑150+ MW campuses).
  • Professional Engineer (PE), Chartered Engineer (CEng) or equivalent professional registration is preferred.
  • Strong knowledge of mission‑critical electrical power systems and resilient electrical infrastructure.
  • Experience in the design of MV/LV power distribution systems, substations, UPS systems, standby generators and critical power architecture.
  • Knowledge of data centre electrical topologies, including distributed redundant, block redundant and concurrently maintainable power systems.
  • Understanding of electrical redundancy philosophies (N, N+1, 2N, 2N+1 and distributed redundancy).
  • Familiarity with IEC standards, IEEE standards, NFPA 70 (NEC), NFPA 70E, IEC 60364, local electrical codes and utility requirements.
  • Experience performing electrical system studies, including load flow, short circuit, protection coordination and arc flash analysis using software such as ETAP, SKM PowerTools or EasyPower.
  • Proficiency in AutoCAD, Revit MEP, Navisworks and BIM coordination.
  • Understanding of commissioning methodologies and integrated systems testing for mission‑critical electrical systems.
