Engineer III - Polyurethane Foam Process

We are on a journey of continuous growth – now looking for our next star – a passionate Engineer III - Polyurethane Foam Process

In this role, you will serve as Igloo’s Subject Matter Expert for our Polyurethane foam process; providing leadership, direction, and control over all foaming related equipment, ensuring maximum reliability and flexibility, and contributing to 5% year-over-year productivity gains. Successful candidates will be self-driven, hands-on, and fully engaged in the advancement of Igloo’s Operations success.

Essential Job Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Serve as Subject Matter Expert (SME) for Igloo’s polyurethane foam process.
  • Conduct daily walks in manufacturing areas to identify production upsets and provide direct hands-on support to resolve.
  • Provide front-line troubleshooting of foaming process.
  • Maximize Igloo’s Polyurethane uptime through regular monitoring of equipment condition and reliability. Schedule as needed outside services for preventative maintenance and calibrations. Example systems/equipment to monitor:
    • Polyurethane Bulk Transfer System
    • Dosing Units
    • Transfer pumps
    • Metering equipment
    • Mixing Heads
  • New Product launch support including:
    • Foam Fixture Design Reviews
    • Foam Fixture Sampling & Physical debugging
    • NPD Foam Process Qualification
  • Confer with planning and design staff concerning product design and tooling to ensure efficient production methods.
  • New Program launch control – concept to production; assign self or team members to all key plant initiatives and provide team leadership and regular meeting through-out project. To include:
    • Foam sampling
    • Fixture sampling
    • Auxiliary equipment run-offs and modifications
  • Coach and Mentor associates in foam basics and best practices
  • Develop and conduct PU Foam 101 training for Igloo associates
  • Troubleshoot process failures and provide Root Cause Corrective Actions driving toward long-lasting and sustainable production practices
  • Actively seek out and pursue process improvements and production cost savings (targeting 2x salary), through the reduction of direct and indirect labor.
  • Provide Technical reports summarizing investigations, qualifications, and experiments as required.
  • Provide courteous support to Marketing, Quality, Finance, Sales as required.
  • Provide leadership and mentorship of fellow engineers and process technicians.
  • Other duties as assigned

Minimum Requirements and Qualifications

A suitable background would be a solid experience within the following qualifications and experiences:

  • Education: Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Polymer Science or similar discipline
  • Minimum Experience: Six (6) years of hands-on polyurethane processing experience
  • English Language Skills: Able to read, write, speak and comprehend English, excellent written and oral skills
  • Math Skills: Able to add, subtract, multiply and divide. Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.
  • Physical Demands: General office and Plant floor environment
  • Work environment: Plant is hot and humid in summer months, cold in winter months
  • Computer Skills: Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite

To be successful in this role, we believe that you possess the following skills, competencies & characteristics:

  • Experience in Production of Plastic consumer products
  • Hands-on Manufacturing Engineering experience is a plus
  • People Skills: team player, good negotiator, good under pressure
  • Public speaking experience

Physical Demands & Conditions
(Applicable to Igloo Operators, Technicians, Leaders, and Other Roles in Manufacturing)

Standing & Walking
Roles may involve extended periods (up to 12 hours) of standing and walking, including moving at a brisk pace and occasional stair climbing.

Postural Requirements
Frequent bending, stooping, kneeling, and working in low or awkward positions during production or maintenance tasks.

Lifting & Material Handling

  • Operator-level roles may involve lifting up to 25 lb repeatedly throughout the shift.
  • Technician-level roles may involve lifting up to 50 lb multiple times per day, including overhead lifts.
  • Where possible, mechanical aids (e.g., hoists, forklifts) are used.

Fine Motor Skills & Tool Use
Use of both hands is required to operate tools, perform adjustments, and handle assembly materials with precision.

Visual Requirements
Sufficient visual acuity (e.g., 20/40 with or without correction) is necessary for tasks involving inspection and safe equipment operation.

Environmental Conditions

  • Work is performed in a production setting where seasonal temperatures may range from 100–120°F (with humidity) in summer to cooler conditions in winter.
  • High noise levels are common; hearing protection is provided and required.
  • Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) such as ear protection, safety glasses, steel-toed shoes, gloves, and protective clothing may be required depending on the task.

Additional Job Considerations
These roles can be physically demanding, involving repetitive motions and long hours. Technicians may be required to handle heavy molds and materials; use of material handling equipment is provided and encouraged.
