About the role
We are looking for an Engineer - Mechanical Area Engineering to support business objectives through defect elimination, root cause analysis, project management, and technical support for on-site maintenance execution, operations, and project teams at the Rio Tinto Kennecott Smelter.
This is a great opportunity for a motivated mechanical engineering professional to make meaningful contributions to the safe and reliable operation of critical assets while supporting production requirements and continuous improvement.
Reporting to the Area Engineering leader and working in a collaborative technical and operational environment at Kennecott, you will:
Provide engineering and troubleshooting support to maintenance execution and operations teams
Identify, own, and implement initiatives that improve safety, asset performance, reliability, and cost outcomes
Support capital project validation and delivery by providing technical input and practical engineering guidance
Initiate and facilitate root cause analysis to mitigate acute and chronic asset failures
Apply defect elimination and failure analysis methods to reduce repeat issues and improve equipment performance
Reconcile production loss accounting data and use insights to identify improvement opportunities
Collaborate with maintenance, operations, reliability, and project teams to support safe execution and business objectives
About you
A commitment to the safety of yourself and your team
Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, preferably Mechanical, or equivalent relevant experience
2+ years of experience in engineering or maintenance roles within an industrial or fixed plant environment
Experience delivering continuous improvement initiatives and engineering projects that support asset performance
Knowledge of defect elimination, root cause analysis, and failure analysis methodologies
Collaborative working style with the ability to partner effectively across maintenance, operations, and technical teams

Where you’ll be working
Our Kennecott mine is a world-class, fully integrated copper mining operation, including a concentrator, smelter and refinery, located just outside Salt Lake City, Utah, in the United States. We produce copper, precious metals including gold and silver, molybdenum, tellurium and sulfuric acid. Kennecott has been mining and processing minerals from the rich ore body of the Bingham Canyon Mine since 1903 and is one of the top producing mines in the world, comprising approximately 11 percent of U.S. annual copper production.
