Engineer - Special Machine/ Tool Design (MAE & Technology)
Summary
Manufacturing automation engineer at Bosch's Bayan Lepas (Penang) plant who plans, purchases, sets up and buys off special machines, workstations, fixtures and tooling for new products and improvement projects, then hands equipment over to maintenance while acting as technology cluster owner. Requires an engineering degree, 3+ years in manufacturing, and Malaysian citizenship.
1. Equipment, Workstation & Investment Planning
- Plan MAE and EWAK (workstation equipment and accessories) investments for new and existing lines/products, including cost and feasibility analysis.
- Develop workstation layouts based on process definitions from VSE/IE.
2. Workstation & Equipment Setup
- Define SRS with the support of Value Stream functions (FPV and QPV), purchase, set up, trial, and buy off all workstations and accessories for new products and automation/improvement projects.
- Set up machines and equipment with IE support and complete buy-off before Pilot Run and Mass Production.
- Drive continuous improvement activities to reduce setup time and enhance stability.
3. Production Line & Process Improvements
- Execute improvement initiatives related to workstation design, ergonomics, VT, and general process performance.
- Collaborate with Maintenance for sustaining activities of running products.
4. Fixtures, Tools & Equipment
- Define, purchase, set up, trial, and buy off fixtures, tools, and equipment for new products.
- Conduct Measurement System Analysis (MSA), Machine Capability studies, and deploy SPC stations when required.
5. Structured Handover to Maintenance
- Preparing and delivering comprehensive maintenance instructions, PM checklists, troubleshooting guides, and equipment documentation.
- Defining and coordinating the spare-parts concept, including critical spare identification.
- Conducting formal training sessions for maintenance technicians and supervisors, including hands-on operation, safety, troubleshooting, and preventive maintenance tasks.
- Ensuring full competence transfer and sign-off before release to mass production.
- Supporting Maintenance during stabilization phase until equipment reaches target performance and reliability.
6. Process Expertise & Technology Ownership
- Build up and maintain deep process expertise in one defined technology area and serve as the internal Technology Cluster Owner.
- Develop technical standards, best practices, and know-how within the assigned technology.
- Provide expert guidance for troubleshooting, process improvements, and new technology evaluations.
- Act as the technical contact for cross-functional teams regarding the assigned technology.
7. Knowledge Transfer & Support
- Train and guide process engineers, trainers, supervisors, and maintenance teams by transferring technical and process know-how for smooth production ramp-up.
8. Additional Responsibilities
- Perform any other duties assigned by the immediate superior as needed.
- Bachelor’s degree in Mechatronics, Mechanical, Electrical, or Electronic Engineering.
- Strong command of English and Bahasa Malaysia; self-driven, able to work independently, and proficient in MS Office applications.
- Minimum 3 years of relevant working experience with a proven track record in a similar engineering or manufacturing environment.
- Ability and willingness to build deep process expertise in one defined technology area and serve as the internal subject-matter expert for that cluster.
- Preferably experienced in New Product Introduction (NPI), process/ manufacturing engineering, and related documentation, such as FMEA, Control Plan (CP), CmK, CpK, SPC, Time Study (VT), Line Balancing, Work Instructions, Visual Aids and Setup Plans.

This role is responsible for conceptualizing, implementing, stabilizing, and standardizing new equipment and fixture setups. The position also serves as technology owner for one designated Technology Cluster.
