Engineering Backend Engineer — Payments

Summary

Build and maintain payment integrations across 50+ rails, focusing on idempotency, reconciliation, and settlement to ensure correct and auditable transactions.

Integrate and operate payment providers across 50+ rails. Your work focuses on correctness — idempotency, reconciliation, and settlement — plus the operational practices that keep those guarantees true in production.

What you'll own

  • Design and implement adapters and protocol handlers for diverse payment rails and providers.
  • Build idempotent APIs, retry/backoff policies, and distributed coordination to prevent duplicate effects.
  • Implement reconciliation pipelines and settlement logic that produce auditable reports and discrepancies.
  • Maintain monitoring, alerting, and runbooks for payment flows, including automated checks and manual investigation steps.
  • Create test harnesses and simulations to validate failure modes, timeouts, and edge cases before deploy.

A typical week

  • Deliver code to support a new provider or feature, with unit and integration tests.
  • Triage and resolve reconciliation mismatches and settlement exceptions with ops and client success.
  • Review incidents, update runbooks, and improve observability for recurring failure patterns.
  • Collaborate with product, client success, and engineering to prioritise rails and operational SLAs.

What we look for

  • Practical experience building or operating payment integrations, settlement, or ledger systems.
  • Strong understanding of idempotency, retries, transactions, and distributed failure modes.
  • Comfortable working with SQL/ledger models, batch processing, and reconciliation logic.
  • Hands‑on operational discipline: alerts, runbooks, postmortems, and automated tests for failure paths.
