Engineering Manager, AI Engineering: Chat
You will manage experienced frontend, backend, and AI engineers delivering GitLab Duo Chat roadmap commitments. You will partner with product and UX to define requirements and deliver AI features that address customer needs and improve answer quality. You will participate in technical architecture and development for AI-agent systems at scale, focusing on reliability, performance, and maintainability. You will set direction, track milestones, remove blockers, coach engineers, and improve testing, observability, and production quality practices.
Responsibilities
- Manage frontend, backend, and AI engineers delivering GitLab Duo Chat roadmap commitments
- Partner with product and UX teams to define requirements and deliver AI features
- Participate in technical architecture and development for AI-agent systems at scale
- Set direction, track milestone progress, and remove blockers
- Coach engineers through feedback, guidance, and development conversations
- Promote curiosity, inclusion, accountability, and steady delivery
- Improve quality, testing, performance, coverage, and observability for AI-powered chat workflows
Requirements
- Experience managing engineering teams in a distributed environment
- Strong software engineering foundation
- Hands-on familiarity with agentic AI or generative AI for software development workflows
- Ability to work through ambiguity, changing requirements, and fast-moving product development
- Communication and collaboration skills across engineering, product, design, and stakeholders
- Experience coaching engineers and creating an inclusive, constructive team environment
- Ability to balance people management with technical involvement in day-to-day development
