Summary

Engineering Manager role at Best Practice Software in Brisbane, leading one of four squads: three maintaining the hybrid C#/Visual Objects flagship desktop product, one building C# cloud APIs. The manager owns delivery, engineering standards, team leadership, technical direction and responsible AI use in a healthcare software setting.

Salary: Negotiable package offered to the right applicant.

At Best Practice Software, our vision is communities connected with care. We’re achieving this through our mission to build a culture people love, where:

  • we value customers,
  • we work together for success,
  • we are accountable for our actions,
  • we innovate for the future, and
  • we celebrate diversity and inclusion.

If you share our vision and values, please consider this exciting career opportunity to join our growing team in Brisbane, Queensland.

That’s our vision. We make the clinical and practice management software that over 7000 Australian Practices run on, used every working day by GPs, Practice Managers, Nurses, Allied Health Providers and Administrative Staff.

We’re hiring four Engineering Managers to lead development squads across our flagship desktop product and our cloud APIs, and to help each squad build software to a standard a clinician can rely on.

The roles

  • Desktop (3 roles): Lead one of three squads maintaining the hybrid C# and Visual Objects codebase behind our flagship desktop product, keeping it stable, secure and maintainable.
  • API Services (1 role): Lead the squad that builds and runs our C# cloud APIs, which support our flagship desktop product and other BPS products. Reliability, clear contracts and safe versioning matter as much as the code.

Both teams work in Azure DevOps and Jira. Let us know in your application which role interests you. If you’re open to both, say so, and we’ll consider you for each.

What you will do

Deliver to market

  • Own the squad’s delivery from planning to release, focusing the team on outcomes and turning agreed priorities into realistic plans
  • Track predictability and quality, negotiate scope trade-offs openly with Product, and escalate early when an outcome is at risk
  • Make sure releases are tested, production-ready and backed by solid deployment and rollback practices

Set the standard

  • Define and uphold engineering standards, and champion automated testing, CI/CD and the BPS Product Quality Strategy
  • Keep the squad’s products healthy by managing technical debt, security, performance and maintainability
  • Meet the regulatory, privacy, security and clinical safety obligations that come with healthcare software
  • Use delivery metrics such as cycle time and DORA to drive improvement

Lead the team

  • Set clear expectations, give regular feedback, and address performance issues promptly and fairly
  • Coach engineers through one-on-ones, code and design reviews, and support clear career pathways
  • Build a culture of ownership, psychological safety and continuous learning, and help attract and onboard great engineers

Guide the technical direction

  • Provide hands-on guidance on design, architecture and implementation, working with Architecture to keep solutions scalable, secure and aligned to the target architecture
  • Give stakeholders clear technical options, estimates and advice

Lead the responsible use of AI

  • Use AI-assisted tools across the SDLC, stay accountable for the quality of the output, and coach engineers to validate AI-generated code
  • Set guardrails in line with BPS policy for security, privacy, IP and patient data, and measure the impact of AI on delivery and quality

Work across BPS

  • Partner with Product to shape priorities and scope, and work with Architecture, Quality, Release and Support to keep delivery smooth and operationally ready
  • Report clearly and regularly on delivery progress, risks, quality and team health

What you will bring

Essential:

  • Proven experience leading software engineering teams that deliver complex products to market predictably and to a high standard
  • A strong hands-on engineering background, with deep knowledge of the SDLC, Agile delivery, CI/CD, automated testing, code review and DevOps
  • A strong hands-on background in C# and .NET
  • Experience leading teams that maintain large, long-lived code bases, or that build and operate APIs used by other teams
  • A track record of establishing engineering standards and processes that lift team output and quality
  • Experience mentoring engineers, managing performance, and building high-performing team cultures
  • Experience managing a range of internal and external stakeholders
  • A post-secondary qualification and Australian work rights

HIghly Desirable:

  • For Desktop roles: experience with Visual Objects or a comparable legacy language
  • For the API Services role: experience with API design and versioning, service observability and operating services in production
  • Experience in medical software, e-health or another regulated healthcare or clinical safety environment, including TGA software as a medical device requirements
  • Knowledge of healthcare interoperability standards such as HL7 and FHIR, and of My Health Record and the Australian Privacy Act
  • Experience using delivery metrics such as DORA to drive continuous improvement
  • Hands-on experience using AI-assisted development tools in an engineering team
