Engineering Manager

👋 Who are we?

Nordhealth (OB:NORDH) is the leading provider of cloud-based Practice Information Management Software (PIMS) to veterinary and therapy professionals.

Over the last three years, we have grown our Annual Recurring Revenue (ARR) and team size by almost 10x. Today, more than 30,000 therapy and veterinary professionals use our software everyday to help treat over 20 million patients annually across 35+ countries. It’s been an exciting growth journey so far and we are just getting started. Our mission is to enable healthcare professionals to deliver better patient care through software, with a goal to help serve over 200 million patients by 2030. In support of this growth mission, in May 2021, Nordhealth raised €120M through a public-listing on Euronext Growth Oslo stock exchange.

Nordhealth is a remote-first company, headquartered in Helsinki, Finland. Our 430+ employees work either remotely or from offices/collaboration hubs. While our market presence is currently strongest in the Nordics, our customer base is rapidly growing in North America and Europe, with clients in the US, UK, Spain and many others. About the role

The Integrate Team connects Provet, our veterinary practice management platform, to the outside world: our public API and developer platform, the gateways to laboratories, insurers, payment and imaging providers, and the integrations required by national regulation across Europe, US and APAC.

Small, fully senior, distributed, and highly autonomous! 🚀

Recent and current work

An in-house Django framework underpinning all new gateway services; a new partner-facing wholesaler API (OAuth scopes, signed webhooks, catalogue ingestion at scale); an API gateway in front of our public interfaces to strengthen our third party access control; national e-prescription and medicine-reporting integrations built to statutory deadlines; laboratory gateway upgrades; and automation of developer experience and partner onboarding.

Tech Stack

Two main stacks, and you will meet both: Python / Django (the core product on MySQL) and PHP / Laravel (a significant, actively developed part of the estate, including some of the busiest gateways). Also an Apache APISIX gateway with custom Lua.

We deploy everything on AWS and Kubernetes, with Terraform, Docker and GitLab CI; We monitor our services with Sentry, Grafana and Cloudwatch.

Nobody arrives knowing all of it. What matters is being genuinely hands-on in one of the two main stacks and willing to work across the rest. The team also makes heavy use of AI tooling day to day.

It is an autonomous role with real ownership and an interesting problem space, and operationally heavy rather than purely strategic.

Your key responsibilities include:

  • Lead and grow the team: 1:1s, goal setting, performance, career development, hiring.

  • Own the roadmap and the prioritisation calls. Demand consistently exceeds capacity, so you decide what is committed, what is declined, and you are accountable for what ships.

  • Stay hands-on: design, write and review code, and own a project yourself.

  • Own the support and API consultancy queue and its service levels. Customers and Partners integrating over our REST API have direct contact with us, and helping them to implement the solution they look for is one of our core activities.

  • Drive work to completion through external dependencies you do not control and regulatory deadlines that do not move.

  • Own the team's own platform: the in-house framework every new integration service is built on by this and other teams.

  • Work directly with partners, and with Product, Support and other engineering teams.

  • Keep security and compliance obligations on track.

What will help you to be successful in this role?

Ideally, you have already gained some experience from working in a fast growing, global SaaS company. In addition, our humble wishlist includes:

  • Engineering Excellence (Language Agnostic): You are a genuinely hands-on builder with high standards for software architecture and code quality. We care more about your ability to design robust systems, conduct rigorous code reviews, and pick up new tools quickly than your familiarity with a specific language. Direct, hands-on experience with our primary stacks (Python/Django or PHP/Laravel) is just a great bonus!

  • Battle-Tested Remote Leadership: You have a proven track record of managing, coaching, and empowering senior, fully distributed engineering teams. You know how to build trust, foster autonomy, and maintain alignment asynchronously.

  • A.I. Workflow Affinity: A strong, practical habit of leveraging AI tooling day-to-day. You actively use AI-assisted development tools to accelerate your own output and can guide the team in maximizing these technologies safely and effectively.

  • Mastery of APIs & Integrations: Extensive experience designing, building, scaling, and securing REST APIs. You are highly comfortable with OAuth scopes, webhook architectures, and API gateways.

  • Ruthless Prioritization: You excel at capacity planning and managing stakeholder expectations. You can confidently balance technical debt, support queues, and fixed statutory deadlines while driving external dependencies to completion.

  • Infrastructure Awareness: Familiarity with modern deployment and monitoring ecosystems—conceptually or directly with tools similar to AWS, Kubernetes, Docker, Terraform, GitLab CI, and Grafana/Sentry.
