Engineering Manager
Summary
Leads a team of ~7 engineers building the real-time, high-throughput trading systems (matching, order management, pricing, settlement) behind ProphetX's CFTC-regulated sports prediction market exchange. A hands-on post-Series A leadership role spanning delivery, architecture, hiring, and coaching, with a Go/Java/C++/Python, Kafka, AWS, and Kubernetes stack.
Role Overview
What You’ll Own
Delivery and Technical Leadership
- Own predictable, high-quality delivery of your team’s roadmap, from planning and estimation through launch and post-launch operations.
- Partner with tech leads on architecture and design decisions for matching, order management, pricing, settlement, and real-time data systems.
- Uphold engineering standards for code quality, testing, scalability, security, and observability.
- Own production health. Drive incident response, postmortems, and follow-through on reliability and latency improvements.
- Balance feature velocity, technical debt, and platform investment, and make the tradeoffs visible to stakeholders.
- Directly manage ~7 engineers, including IC1 through IC4 levels, with regular 1:1s, feedback, and performance reviews.
- Set clear expectations by level and coach engineers toward promotion and career goals.
- Lead hiring: define roles, run interview loops, and close strong candidates.
- Identify skill gaps and create mentorship and training opportunities.
- Build an inclusive, accountable, and collaborative team culture, including across remote, offshore, and globally distributed teammates.
- Partner with Product to turn business goals into clear scope, requirements, and timelines.
- Work with Compliance, Risk, and Legal to build products that meet CFTC regulatory and operational requirements.
- Communicate progress, risks, and milestones to executives and stakeholders, with early escalation of risks and no surprises.
- Collaborate with other Engineering Managers and Tech Leads on cross-team initiatives, shared platforms, and dependencies.
- Run lightweight, effective agile practices (sprint planning, check-ins, retros) and improve them continuously.
- Define and track team health and delivery metrics, such as cycle time, deployment frequency, and incident and change failure rates.
- Drive improvements in tooling, CI/CD, and developer productivity.
- Make build-versus-buy and prioritization decisions with clear reasoning and documentation.
What We’re Looking For
- 7+ years of software engineering experience, including 2+ years managing engineering teams (or leading teams as a tech lead with strong management experience)
- Strong technical background building scalable, low-latency, real-time systems in production, ideally in fintech, trading or exchange, crypto, or other high-throughput transactional environments
- Hands-on familiarity with modern backend stacks (Go, Java, C++, or Python), microservices, event-driven architecture (Kafka), and REST and WebSocket APIs
- Experience with cloud infrastructure (AWS or equivalent), containerization (Docker, Kubernetes), and CI/CD
- Working knowledge of observability and incident management (New Relic, Datadog, Kibana, or similar)
- Proven record of delivering complex projects on time while managing scope, risk, and stakeholder expectations
- Demonstrated ability to coach, develop, and retain engineers, and to give direct, constructive feedback
- Experience managing distributed or offshore teams
- Strong communicator who can explain complex technical tradeoffs to technical and non-technical audiences
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field (or equivalent experience)
- Proactive, adaptable, and comfortable with ambiguity, with a strong sense of ownership
- Experience in prediction markets, sports betting, or regulated exchanges (CFTC or similar)
- Familiarity with risk, fraud, KYC/AML, or settlement systems
- Experience scaling a team through hiring and growth in a startup environment
- Competitive compensation aligned to role and market
- Equity opportunities so you share in what we’re building
- A clear connection between impact and reward
- Medical, dental, and vision coverage
- Flexible time off built on trust and accountability
- A culture that respects your time and avoids unnecessary meetings
- Fully remote within the U.S.
- Flexibility to work in the way that helps you do your best work
- Lead a team of ~7 engineers building the real-time, high-throughput systems at the core of America’s first sports-native, CFTC-regulated prediction market
- Take on a hands-on leadership role with real influence over architecture, hiring, and how a high-performing engineering team is built from the ground up
- Help scale a live, regulated exchange as prediction markets grow into America’s next great asset class
