Engineering Manager
Salary: Competitive remuneration
About the role
The Advisor Platform (TAP) is our platform for financial advisers, built for the realities of regulated advice in New Zealand. We're looking for a hands-on Engineering Manager to set the technical direction for TAP while spending most of their time building. You'll own the architecture, lead our front-end modernisation from Angular to React, and help the team ship quickly, safely and well in an AI-assisted delivery model.
What you'll do
Technical leadership
Own TAP's technical direction and architecture, making pragmatic calls on design, trade-offs and technical debt
Act as the technical counterpart to the TAP Product Manager, shaping roadmap items into well-scoped plans and flagging risk early
Set and uphold our engineering minimums across system design, testability, observability, security, performance, data integrity, compliance and operability
Lead how the team uses AI in delivery, including context files, workflows and review standards, so AI speeds us up without lowering the bar
Hands-on delivery
Design, build and own features end-to-end: database schema, secure C#/.NET APIs, and React/Angular UI
Build scalable services using RESTful and event-driven patterns, plus integrations with third-party platforms
Plan the work, use AI coding agents to speed up implementation, and take full accountability for what ships
Drive automated test coverage across backend and front-end, reducing our reliance on manual QA
Take on the hardest problems yourself when it makes sense, and pair on them when it's better for the team
Team
Set the standard for code review, particularly for AI-generated code, and help others catch subtle bugs, security gaps and design drift
Mentor engineers and support their growth, with scope to take on line management as the team develops
Work closely with product, design, QA and the wider engineering team to deliver cohesive, user-centred experiences
Our Tech Stack
Backend: C# / .NET (Core/5+), RESTful and event-driven APIs
Data: SQL Server, plus other data stores
Frontend: React (primary, going forward), Angular (existing modules), TypeScript, HTML, CSS/SCSS
Cloud & DevOps: Azure, Github CI/CD pipelines, Infrastructure as Code (Terraform etc)
Observability: Datadog
AI Tooling: Copilot
What you bring
6+ years building customer-facing applications across the full stack, including at least 1-2 years in a technical lead or senior role setting direction for a team
Deep proficiency in C# and .NET, with a strong track record of designing secure, well-documented APIs
Strong SQL and data modelling skills
Solid modern TypeScript and front-end experience, with real React depth and enough Angular to lead a migration off it
Experience leading or significantly contributing to a large-scale modernisation or framework migration
Hands-on experience using AI coding tools in real delivery work, and a clear view on where they help and where they don't
Excellent code-reading and review skills, and comfort owning code you didn't write line by line
The ability to turn ambiguous product problems into clear technical plans, and explain trade-offs to non-technical stakeholders
A product mindset: you care about the "why" behind a feature, not just the "how"
We Offer
Competitive remuneration that reflects your experience
Hybrid model - 2 days per week in our Auckland/Christchurch office
A supportive and collaborative team environment
