Environmental Protection Specialist
This vacancy is for a GS-0028-9, Environmental Protection Specialist located in the Department of Homeland Security, U.S. Coast Guard, Base Astoria, Base Astoria Public Works Division located in Warrenton, OR.
You will serve as an Environmental Protection Specialist and be responsible for assisting with day-day environmental compliance requirements, including the development, execution, and sustainment and continual improvement of the environmental management program. Being a Coast Guard civilian makes you a valuable member of the Coast Guard team. Typical work assignments include: Participating in the training and education of personnel at all levels on regulation requirements, environmental protection matters, sustainability efforts, and environmental program goals and objectives. Conducting inspections of facilities and equipment, internal audits of installation activities and operations, ensuring hazardous waste storage facilities/areas and hazardous. Conducting reviews of operating records and data, sampling and analysis, taking samples and accumulating information as necessary, and providing oversight of contractor project work. Supporting the development and implementation of policy and procedural documents to comply with current and new changing environmental regulations. Implementing/executing management/oversight of a variety of waste streams generated throughout the complex to include hazardous waste, universal wastes, used oil/oily wastes and various other solids wastes. Collecting/compiling data for incorporation into established environmental program metrics; participating in the preparation of written plans and schedules; and providing input for setting milestones to accomplish program goals, and tracking/documenting environmental program compliance/pollution prevention. Assessing reports, implementing commensurate corrective actions plans, monitoring and tracking required corrective actions, and inputting data and related information in designated database(s). Must be able to obtain and maintain a Coast Guard issued Environmental Planning (NEPA) Warrant. Must be able to obtain and maintain an OSHA 40 hour certification (HAZWOPER). Must be able to obtain and maintain a RCRA Hazardous Waste Management Certification. Must be able to obtain and maintain Hazardous Material Transportation certification.
