Location: Petersburg, VA
Department: Construction/Manufacturing
Pay: $20–$25 per hour, based on experience
Classification: Non-exempt
Schedule: Full-time, Monday–Friday; occasional evenings, weekends, and overtime may be required

About the Role

ColonialWebb is seeking a dependable Equipment Operator to support commercial construction projects in the Petersburg area. You’ll safely operate construction equipment, help move materials, and work with the crew when equipment operation is not needed. This role reports to a General Superintendent or Construction Manager.

Responsibilities

• Safely operate backhoes, front-end loaders, excavators, skid steers, lifts, and other construction equipment.
• Inspect equipment before use, perform routine preventive maintenance, and report defects, damage, or accidents to a supervisor.
• Assess digging areas before operating equipment and follow jobsite, customer, and company safety procedures.
• Load and unload construction materials from trucks and move them around jobsites and buildings.
• Follow safe cargo transportation practices and applicable traffic rules.
• Work with the crew or perform labor tasks when not operating equipment.
• Help train authorized personnel on proper equipment operation.
• Maintain a clean, professional appearance and take care of equipment, tools, vehicles, and customer property.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

• Experience operating construction equipment safely.
• Knowledge of OSHA safety practices and applicable DOT requirements.
• Ability to obtain VDOT flagger certification.
• Understanding of traffic laws and rules related to construction equipment operation.
• Ability to work outdoors in varying weather and around jobsite hazards.
• Ability to work independently, coordinate multiple tasks, and respond calmly to changing priorities.
• Good communication skills and the ability to work professionally with customers and coworkers.
• Ability to read and understand equipment operating manuals.
• Willingness to work occasional evenings, weekends, or overtime as project needs require.

Physical Requirements

• Ability to see clearly, with or without corrective lenses.
• Ability to wear required personal protective equipment, including a hard hat, safety glasses, hearing protection, gloves, fall protection, safety-toed footwear, and a high-visibility vest.
• Ability to perform the physical tasks required for the role. Lifting more than 80 pounds requires advance planning and the use of lifting equipment or assistance.
