Summary

Maintains and repairs custodial equipment like vacuums, scrubbers, and extractors for a university campus, performing preventive and reactive maintenance with minimal supervision.

Pay: $20/HR
The pay listed is the hourly rate for this position as outlined by the collective bargaining agreement.

The Technician completes assigned preventive maintenance and reactive maintenance repairs.

Equipment Technician – Custodial Operations
Minimum Qualifications
  • Experience diagnosing, maintaining, and repairing custodial equipment, including but not limited to:
    • Kaivac cleaning systems
    • Kärcher equipment
    • Upright vacuums
    • Backpack vacuums
    • Automatic scrubbers (walk-behind and ride-on)
    • Carpet extractors and other custodial equipment
  • Working knowledge of preventive maintenance procedures, troubleshooting, and repair of electrical, battery-operated, and mechanical cleaning equipment.
  • Demonstrated experience operating a wide variety of custodial equipment safely and effectively.
  • Ability to inspect equipment, identify operational issues, order or replace parts, and complete repairs with minimal supervision.
  • Knowledge of cleaning industry equipment manufacturers, components, and maintenance best practices.
  • Ability to maintain maintenance records, repair logs, and equipment inventory documentation.
  • Familiarity with the Oregon State University campus and ability to successfully perform assigned lockup/security routes.
  • Ability to work independently and prioritize equipment repairs to support operational needs.
  • Strong customer service and communication skills when interacting with custodial staff, supervisors, and university personnel.
  • Ability to lift, move, and transport equipment, tools, batteries, and repair components weighing up to 50 pounds or more with assistance as needed.
  • Ability to keep and maintain a current equipment inventory list
  • Possession of a valid driver's license and an acceptable driving record (if required for position duties).
Additional Preferred Skills
  • Ability to troubleshoot and replace batteries, chargers, squeegees, brushes, vacuum motors, belts, filters, and electrical components.
  • Experience maintaining equipment inventory and tracking repair history.
  • Ability to train custodial staff on proper operation, care, and daily maintenance of equipment.
  • Familiarity with chemical dispensing systems and dilution control equipment.
  • Knowledge of workplace safety practices, including lockout/tagout procedures and safe handling of batteries and chemicals.
  • Ability to respond to after-hours equipment emergencies and urgent operational needs.
  • Experience with preventative maintenance programs to maximize equipment lifespan and reduce downtime.
Training & Certifications
  • Must obtain Bloodborne Pathogens Training within 30 days of hire and maintain certification as required.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Previous experience supporting custodial operations in a university, healthcare, commercial, or institutional environment.
  • Experience working with Kaivac systems, Kärcher equipment, Tennant, Nilfisk, Windsor, Clarke, Advance, or similar commercial custodial equipment brands.
  • Experience developing preventive maintenance schedules and managing equipment lifecycle replacement planning.
  • Knowledge of campus security procedures, building access systems, and lockup responsibilities.
Physical Requirements
  • Frequently lift, carry, push, and pull equipment weighing up to 50 pounds.
  • Ability to bend, kneel, climb stairs, and work in mechanical spaces or custodial closets.
  • Ability to operate university vehicles or carts if required.
