Project Overview:

After more than 35 years’ operating as a successful uranium mine, the Ranger Project is entering its rehabilitation stage. Bechtel will be working alongside ERA and major stakeholder Rio Tinto to restore the land to the status of its surrounding World Heritage listed Kakadu National Park.

A collaborative project, this project will be developed in consultation with the Mirarr Traditional Owners and will benefit the Jabiru community. Located 8 km east of Jabiru and 260 km south-east of Darwin, the Ranger Project will lead the way in the fast-growing area of mining closures.

Job Summary:

We are seeking an experienced Health & Safety Specialist to provide leadership and technical expertise across the Ranger Rehabilitation Project. As a senior member of the Health & Safety team, you will play a pivotal role in supporting project leadership, driving continuous improvement, and fostering a culture of safety excellence. Acting in the absence of the H&S Superintendent, you will provide leadership, guidance and oversight across all Health & Safety functions.

Major Responsibilities:

Reporting to the H&S Superintendent, you will:

  • Support and develop a team of H&S professionals across the disciplines of safety, emergency management, training, occupational hygiene, radiation, and health.
  • Champion leadership capability by supporting and enhancing the project's safety coaching program.
  • Drive the implementation of health and safety maturity initiatives that strengthen culture, engagement, and performance.
  • Partner with project leaders and contractors to ensure the safe planning and execution of work activities.
  • Provide leadership and oversight of the Critical Risk Management (CRM) program to ensure critical controls remain effective.
  • Ensure robust onboarding and mobilisation processes are in place to support contractor compliance and workforce preparedness.
  • Oversee the application of risk management processes, ensuring hazards are identified, assessed, and effectively controlled.
  • Provide governance, assurance, and expert guidance on incident investigations, ensuring quality outcomes and organisational learning.
  • Analyse and communicate H&S performance trends, risks, and insights to project leadership to support informed decision-making.
  • Drive the development, implementation, and continuous improvement of the project's emergency management and business resilience framework, ensuring effective preparedness, response, and recovery capability through robust planning, stakeholder engagement, emergency exercises, and assurance activities.
  • Provide oversight of H&S management systems, standards, and digital tools to ensure ongoing compliance and operational effectiveness.
  • Act as a delegate for the H&S Superintendent and H&S Manager, representing the function at key project leadership forums and stakeholder engagements when required.

Education and Experience Requirements:

  • Tertiary qualifications in Health & Safety or a related discipline.
  • Significant experience in a senior H&S leadership role within a major project, construction, mining, resources, or industrial environment.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead, influence, and develop multidisciplinary teams.
  • Strong stakeholder engagement skills, with the ability to build trusted relationships across all levels of an organisation.
  • Proven capability in risk management, incident investigation, and continuous improvement.
  • Sound knowledge of relevant Health & Safety legislation, standards, and regulatory requirements.
  • Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making skills.
  • A current driver's licence.

Required Knowledge and Skills:

  • Experience leading or supporting Critical Risk Management (CRM) programs.
  • Formal incident investigation qualifications (ICAM, Essential Factors, TapRooT®, or equivalent).
  • Experience with emergency management and business resilience programs.
  • Knowledge of contractor management frameworks within large project environments.
  • Experience using SAP and associated business systems.
