Description

The Executive Director of New Product Planning (NPP) owns the commercial strategy for the company's early- and mid-stage pipeline, from preclinical through Phase 3. This leader makes sure every asset is developed with a clear view of patient need, market opportunity, and value to payers. The Executive Director of NPP represents the Commercial organization in the development of Business Development strategy and in evaluation of Business Development opportunities. Working at the intersection of R&D, Medical Affairs, Market Access, and Business Development, the role shapes target product profiles, forecasts asset value, informs portfolio investment decisions, and builds the launch foundation for assets entering late-stage development. The ideal candidate combines strategic judgment with deep biopharma commercial experience and the presence to influence senior governance bodies.

Key Roles & Responsibilities

Pipeline commercial strategy

  • Lead the commercial assessment of pipeline assets from preclinical through Phase 3, defining the indication, patient population, and positioning that maximize asset value.
  • Develop and own target product profiles (TPPs) in partnership with Clinical Development, Regulatory, and Medical Affairs, ensuring they reflect what physicians, patients, and payers will value.
  • Shape clinical development plans by bringing the commercial voice to trial design, endpoint selection, comparator choice, and indication sequencing.
  • Build integrated asset strategies, including lifecycle management and indication expansion opportunities.

Market insight and forecasting

  • Direct market research, KOL engagement, and competitive intelligence to define unmet need, treatment paradigms, and evolving standards of care.
  • Oversee long-range revenue forecasts and asset valuations (rNPV), working with Finance and Forecasting to ensure assumptions are rigorous and defensible.
  • Monitor the competitive landscape and anticipate how emerging therapies, biosimilars, and policy changes (such as MFN or IRA drug price negotiation) will affect asset value.

Portfolio and governance

  • Represent the commercial perspective at portfolio review, stage-gate, and investment governance committees, translating asset strategy into clear recommendations for executive leadership.
  • Inform portfolio prioritization and resource allocation across therapeutic areas.
  • Partner with Business Development on in-licensing, partnership, and M&A evaluations, leading commercial due diligence and opportunity assessments.

Market access and launch readiness

  • Work with Market Access and HEOR to define the evidence payers will need and embed it in development plans early.
  • Lead the transition of late-stage assets into launch planning, handing off well-developed strategy, brand foundations, and market-shaping plans to the in-line commercial team.
  • Guide pre-launch disease awareness and market development activities in compliance with regulatory and promotional guidelines.

Role leadership

  • Manage the NPP budget, agency partners, and external vendors.
  • Foster a culture of scientific curiosity, analytical rigor, and cross-functional collaboration.

Education & Licenses and Experience

  • Bachelor's degree in life sciences, business, or a related field.
  • 12+ years of biopharmaceutical industry experience, including 8+ years in commercial roles such as new product planning, global marketing, commercial strategy, or strategy consulting focused on life sciences.
  • Demonstrated experience shaping development-stage assets, including TPP development and commercial input into clinical development plans.
  • Hands-on experience with forecasting, asset valuation, and market research methodologies.
  • 5+ years of people leadership, including managing managers.
  • Track record of influencing senior leaders and governance bodies without direct authority.
  • Travel may be required for up to 25% of time worked.

Preferred Experience

  • Launch experience for at least one specialty product in the U.S. or globally.
  • Experience in relevant therapeutic areas (to be specified by the hiring team).
  • Exposure to business development and commercial due diligence.
  • Working knowledge of U.S. and ex-U.S. pricing, reimbursement, and HTA requirements.

Competencies & Skills

  • Strategic thinking: Connects science, market dynamics, and business economics into a clear point of view on where an asset can win.
  • Scientific fluency: Engages credibly with clinicians and scientists on mechanism, trial design, and data interpretation.
  • Analytical rigor: Builds and challenges forecasts and valuations, and is comfortable making decisions under uncertainty.
  • Influence and communication: Presents complex trade-offs simply to executive committees and aligns diverse functions around a recommendation.
  • Enterprise mindset: Balances individual asset advocacy with what is best for the overall portfolio.
  • Talent builder: Attracts, coaches, and retains strong commercial talent.

Key Relationships

  • Internal partners: Clinical Development, Regulatory Affairs, Medical Affairs, Market Access and HEOR, Finance and Forecasting, Commercial Operations, and in-line brand teams.
  • External partners: Key opinion leaders, patient advocacy groups, market research and forecasting agencies, and strategy consultants.
