Job Summary

This is semi-skilled craft work that is responsible for the technical operation of the Authority’s vegetation management system. The position is responsible for maintaining vegetation in ditches, pavement areas, fence-lines, etc. on the airfield, roadways, and all JAA accounts on landside and airside. The work is semi-routine in that tasks are covered by somewhat diversified procedures and precedents, but some latitude is permitted to consider the most appropriate method, technique, or procedure to follow. The work involves differing situations requiring use of judgment in searching for solutions or new applications. The work is performed primarily outdoors where there are risks and hazards, but they are known, predictable, and controllable. This work requires knowledge of the techniques, methods, and procedures used in maintaining airfield and grounds associated with day to day operations. Must work in coordination with the wildlife technician to ensure that vegetation that inhibits food sources for insects and irritant species in wildlife habitats is being managed. This work uses hand tools associated with repair and maintenance of mechanical equipment. The work is performed under general supervision where the work assignments are varied and, although subject to standard practices and procedures, the worker is permitted some latitude to set priorities subject to superior's approval. This position requires employees’ schedules to rotate based on shift work and weekend/holiday work requirements to maintain 24/7 operations.

Essential Functions

    • Assist in planning, organizing and coordinating the activities of the grounds personnel to provide general maintenance and repair of JAA facilities based on Sprayer Technician job requirements.
    • Assist leadership in managing daily functions of Landscape Contractors, Irrigation Contractors, and all other contractors as needed based on Sprayer Technician job requirements.
    • Insures that contractors provide the scope of service according to the contract
    • Maintains a weekly log on contractors, supervises daily and assists in evaluating performance of the contractors.
    • Works in accordance with strict FAA, TSA and FDOT regulations at all times.
    • Identifies and coordinates ditch and fence spraying on airside and landside grounds.
    • Performs routine-to-skilled duties in the maintenance and repair of grounds at JAA.
    • Provides training, instruction, and technical assistance to staff on proper fertilizing. techniques and chemical applications, while establishing and communicating reasonable standards of performance.
    • Promotes and enforces job safety methods and practices while ensuring all personnel are properly trained on safe usage of chemicals, tools, equipment and materials.
    • Ensures the timely completion of preventive and predictive maintenance programs.
    • Responsible for the utilizing the Computerized Maintenance Management System to input and close work orders.
    • Responsible for ordering chemicals, and fertilizers, keeping a log on all chemical use and maintaining an accurate logbook of all Safety Data Sheets to include ensuring chemicals and fertilizers are in stock to maintain all JAA accounts.
    • Will be solely responsible for ordering, while maintaining an accurate log on usage and stock.
    • Perform Duties assigned as a Technician I.
    • Perform landscape and minor construction work as required.
    • Uses small mowers, weed eaters, blowers, chainsaws and other landscaping equipment.
    • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Extensive Knowledge of landscape plants, shrubs, and trees to include growth habits, diseases and insects.
  • Extensive knowledge of pesticides, herbicides, and fungicides.
  • Must be capable of identifying needs and coordinating ditch and fence spraying on airside and landside grounds.
  • Experience in planning projects.
  • Must be generally familiar with FAA, TSA and FDOT regulations.
  • Working knowledge and utilization of means, tools and equipment utilized in chemical spray operations.
  • Must be familiar with herbicides, pesticides, fungicides.
  • Must be familiar with growth stages of insects and know the best time and climate to treat various pests.
  • Must be familiar with pesticides used to treat mollusks.
  • Able to operate communication devices (i.e., two-way radio) and to clearly communicate with other JAA employees
  • Working knowledge and utilization of Microsoft Office Products, Oracle eAM work order system, and time and attendance keeping system
  • Ability to provide excellent customer service to internal and external customers.
  • Capability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with diverse population segments.
  • Must have the aptitude to train other team members.
