Family Physician for Southwest Nova Scotia Correctional Facility (SNSCF)

We are seeking a dedicated and experienced Family Physician to join our healthcare team. This part-time Family Physician position involves working half a day per week. The successful candidate will provide primary care services to persons in custody, manage chronic and acute medical conditions, and work collaboratively with an interdisciplinary team to promote the overall health and well-being of this population.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide primary care services, including diagnosis, treatment, and management of acute and chronic illnesses.
  • Conduct medical assessments for new and existing persons in custody.
  • Develop and implement treatment plans for chronic conditions such as diabetes, hypertension, and other conditions.
  • Work closely with nursing staff, mental health professionals, and other healthcare providers to ensure coordinated and comprehensive care.
  • Maintain accurate and up-to-date medical records in accordance with NS Health policies and legal requirements.
  • Documentation of patient contacts shall be made consistent with policies and procedures of Mental Health Services, NSHA.
  • Operate within the policies and procedures of NS Health.
  • Participate in quality improvement and evaluation activities associated with SNSCF
  • Agrees to perform the work required in a timely, and clinically responsible manner.

Medical Degree: Doctor of Medicine (MD) from an accredited institution.

  • Licensure:
    • Licensed to practice/eligible for Licensure with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Nova Scotia (CPSNS).
    • All family medicine physicians must be eligible for certification with the College of Family Physicians of Canada (CFPC)
  • Experience: Minimum of 3 years of experience in family medicine or a related field. Experience in correctional healthcare is an asset but not required.
  • Skills: Strong clinical skills, excellent communication, and the ability to work effectively in an interdisciplinary team.
  • Professionalism: High ethical standards and a commitment to providing compassionate, respectful care to all PIC.
