FAS Associate Data Privacy and Information Security Officer

Summary

Oversee data privacy and cybersecurity for Harvard’s Faculty of Arts and Sciences, enforcing policies, managing risks, and guiding faculty and researchers on safeguarding sensitive information.

This role champions data privacy and information security (PrivSec) throughout FAS, with the goal of facilitating awareness, system fortification, vulnerability management, privacy initiatives, and incident response — all in close alignment with the university's PrivSec program. This position reports up to the University Information Security and Data Privacy Office.

Job-Specific Responsibilities:

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Facilitate awareness of PrivSec risks, policies, and safeguards.
  • Ensure FAS systems are fortified to university PrivSec standards.
  • Implement effective and sustainable vulnerability management processes across FAS systems.
  • Promulgate university-wide PrivSec initiatives throughout FAS.
  • Conduct data safety reviews in support of research projects.
  • Perform PrivSec risk assessments.
  • Maintain awareness of PrivSec threats and trends.
  • Serve as a trusted advisor to FAS faculty, staff, and students on PrivSec matters.
  • Prepare and provide PrivSec briefings to FAS members.
  • Report PrivSec metrics for FAS to the University Chief Information Security and Data Privacy Officer on a quarterly basis.

Basic Qualifications:

Basic Qualifications are the minimum threshold a candidate must meet in order to be considered for this role.

  • Minimum of five years’ post-secondary education or relevant work experience

Additional Qualifications and Skills:

  • Deep understanding of applied cybersecurity.
  • Familiarity with applied privacy.
  • Comfort with complex higher-education environments, including frequent interactions with faculty and researchers.

  • Demonstrated growth mindset.

Work Format Details

This position has been determined by school or unit leaders that some of the duties and responsibilities can be effectively performed at a non-Harvard location. The work schedule and location will be set by the department at its discretion and based upon operational needs. When not working at a Harvard or Harvard-designated location, employees in hybrid positions must work in a Harvard registered state in compliance with the University’s Policy on Employment Outside of Massachusetts. Additional details will be discussed during the interview process. Certain visa types and funding sources may limit work location. Individuals must meet work location sponsorship requirements prior to employment.
