Description

Fastly Security Engineer – Bot Intelligence & Traffic Analysis

Position Overview

We are seeking a Security Engineer focused on Bot Intelligence and Traffic Analysis to help analyze and improve how automated traffic interacts with large-scale eCommerce platforms. Experience with Fastly is the most important part of this job description.

This role sits at the intersection of security, observability, site reliability, web performance, and data analysis. You will serve as a key resource for understanding bot-related activity, identifying traffic patterns and anomalies, measuring business and performance impact, and providing actionable insights to engineering teams responsible for mitigation.

This is an excellent opportunity for someone who enjoys digging into data, investigating unusual web behavior, and using observability tools to solve complex performance and security problems.

Hybrid in New Albany, OH. Only local candidates will be considered.

$60-70 per hour pay range. W2 only.

You must be employable in the United States without sponsorship to be eligible for this open job.

What You'll Do

  • Monitor and analyze web traffic to identify bot activity, unusual behavior, and emerging traffic patterns.

  • Use observability and monitoring platforms such as Splunk, Dynatrace, and FullStory to investigate traffic and performance.

  • Analyze request rates, HTTP headers, sessions, geographic patterns, user behavior, and other signals to distinguish legitimate users from automated traffic.

  • Investigate traffic anomalies, performance degradation, security concerns, and unexpected traffic spikes.

  • Translate findings into clear, actionable recommendations for senior engineers responsible for mitigation.

  • Build and maintain dashboards, alerts, queries, and recurring reports that improve visibility into bot traffic and its impact.

  • Quantify bot activity across areas such as traffic volume, site performance, conversion, and customer experience.

  • Partner with engineering teams to document bot detection and mitigation processes, including playbooks and decision frameworks.

  • Support optimization of CDN configurations, particularly Fastly, through data-driven traffic analysis.

  • Collaborate with Site Reliability Engineering, Information Security, Product, Analytics, and Engineering teams.

  • Explore opportunities to use AI and automation to improve bot identification, traffic analysis, reporting, and alerting.

  • Contribute to internal scripts, tools, or AI-driven agents that automate analysis and operational workflows.

  • Maintain technical documentation covering tools, processes, queries, and data sources.

What We're Looking For

  • 3+ years of experience in web analytics, observability, site reliability, security engineering, or a related technical analysis role.

  • Experience with observability and monitoring platforms such as:

    • Splunk

    • Dynatrace

    • FullStory

    • Similar enterprise monitoring platforms

  • Strong analytical skills with experience interpreting large datasets and identifying patterns or anomalies.

  • Experience building dashboards, queries, alerts, and operational reports.

  • Understanding of web traffic concepts including:

    • HTTP requests and headers

    • Sessions and user behavior

    • Caching

    • CDN behavior

    • Web performance

  • Familiarity with content delivery networks (CDNs); Fastly experience is especially valuable.

  • Working knowledge of Git-based repositories, preferably GitLab.

  • Basic scripting or query-language experience.

  • Experience partnering with engineering teams to investigate, triage, and prioritize technical issues.

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills with the ability to translate technical findings for different audiences.

  • Experience creating technical documentation, process guides, or operational playbooks.

  • Interest in AI and automation and their application to operational and security workflows.

Nice to Have

  • Bot management, fraud detection, or security traffic-analysis experience.

  • Fastly experience.

  • Varnish Configuration Language (VCL).

  • CDN rule configuration, WAF, or traffic-filtering experience.

  • GitLab and Terraform exposure.

  • Experience contributing to AI/ML or automation initiatives.

  • Familiarity with eCommerce performance metrics and customer-experience KPIs.

Education

Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, or a related field, or equivalent professional experience, preferred.

Ideal Candidate

The strongest candidate will combine observability and traffic-analysis experience with an investigative security mindset. They should be comfortable working with Splunk/Dynatrace-style tooling, analyzing HTTP and CDN traffic, building dashboards and alerts, and turning large amounts of technical data into recommendations that engineers can act on.

Experience specifically analyzing bots, automated traffic, CDN behavior, WAFs, or eCommerce traffic patterns would be particularly valuable.
