Field Service Apprentice (4 year contract)

Summary

Apprentice maintains and repairs gas/steam turbines and related equipment at customer sites while studying toward a Level 3 Engineering Maintenance Technician qualification.

We are looking for an enthusiastic Apprentice Engineering Maintenance Technician to join our Field Service team. You will combine structured study with practical, hands-on experience maintaining gas turbines, steam turbines, valves and associated equipment at customer sites.

This is an opportunity to learn from experienced engineers and technicians while contributing to the safe and reliable operation of major power-generation equipment. As your knowledge and competence develop, you will take on a broader range of fitting, maintenance and turbine-blading activities.

You will work towards the Level 3 Engineering Maintenance Technician (Single Discipline) Advanced Apprenticeship, following the Mechanical Engineering Maintenance Technician pathway with Blackpool and The Fylde College. The programme develops practical and technical capability in engineering principles, maintenance techniques, fault diagnosis, engineering drawings, health and safety, mechanical assemblies, hydraulics, pneumatics and rotating machinery.

Your learning will be completed through a combination of supervised, hands-on work at our customer sites in the UK and overseas, together with the required off-the-job training delivered through distance learning. You must commit to completing all required training, learning and assessments..

Key Responsibilities

  • Support planned maintenance and outage work on gas turbines, steam turbines, valves and related equipment.
  • Assist with the safe disassembly, inspection, repair and reassembly of mechanical equipment.
  • Learn to use engineering tools, drawings, specifications and maintenance documentation correctly.
  • Develop practical fitting, measurement, fault-finding and turbine-blading skills under appropriate supervision.
  • Follow Mitsubishi Power procedures, quality standards, site rules and safe systems of work.
  • Record work accurately and raise concerns, defects or unsafe conditions promptly.
  • Work positively with colleagues, customers, contractors and local site teams.
  • Travel to customer sites in the UK and, as your capability develops, potentially elsewhere in Europe and internationally.
  • A genuine interest in mechanical engineering, maintenance and hands-on technical work.
  • GCSE English and Maths (Grades 9–4 or A*–C), or equivalent Level 2 Functional Skills.
  • A practical, methodical approach to problem-solving and a willingness to learn.
  • A strong commitment to safety, quality and following instructions and procedures.
  • Reliability, integrity and the ability to work constructively as part of a team.
  • Clear communication skills and the confidence to ask questions when unsure.
  • Flexibility to work at customer sites and travel (including Overseas) as required by the role.
  • Previous engineering study, practical experience or a relevant Level 2 qualification would be helpful, but is not essential.
