Field Service Technician

Discussion

Position Summary

Arrow Rental & Supply is seeking a resourceful and hands-on Field Service Technician to join our growing team. This position is responsible for inspecting, diagnosing, maintaining, and repairing a wide range of construction and rental equipment.

Unlike a traditional dealership or dedicated heavy-equipment repair position, this role requires someone comfortable working on different types of equipment and independently determining the cause of mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, or operational problems. The technician will research unfamiliar issues, identify and source parts, complete repairs, and test equipment before returning it to service.

The ideal candidate is a safety-focused, self-motivated technician with broad mechanical experience, strong troubleshooting skills, and a willingness to support other operational needs within a small, collaborative team.

Key Responsibilities

  • Inspect construction and rental equipment returned from project sites and identify necessary repairs.
  • Diagnose mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, and operational problems.
  • Maintain and repair various construction and rental equipment, including generators, skid steers, excavators, light towers, golf carts, negative-air machines, small-engine equipment, and construction tools.
  • Troubleshoot equipment when the reported problem is unclear or limited information is available.
  • Research unfamiliar equipment, technical issues, and appropriate repair procedures.
  • Contact manufacturers, vendors, and equipment suppliers for technical information when necessary.
  • Identify, source, and order replacement parts and repair materials.
  • Perform preventive maintenance and scheduled service work.
  • Repair or replace defective parts, components, and systems.
  • Read and interpret technical manuals, equipment diagrams, work orders, and applicable schematics.
  • Test repaired equipment to confirm proper operation and safe performance before returning it to service.
  • Complete service reports, maintenance records, and other required documentation.
  • Track equipment condition, repair status, parts orders, and completed work.
  • Keep equipment clean, lubricated, maintained, and ready for use.
  • Maintain a clean, safe, and organized repair area.
  • Communicate equipment status, repair needs, and expected completion timelines to the appropriate team members.
  • Respond to equipment issues at project sites when field support is required.
  • Occasionally assist with the delivery or pickup of smaller equipment using a company flatbed or service vehicle.
  • Support equipment movement, project mobilization, demobilization, and yard operations when needed.
  • Follow all company safety policies, procedures, and regulatory requirements.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Three to five years of experience servicing and repairing construction, rental, industrial, or small-engine equipment.
  • Experience diagnosing and repairing a variety of equipment rather than specializing exclusively in passenger vehicles or large diesel machinery.
  • Working knowledge of mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, and small-engine systems.
  • Ability to independently troubleshoot equipment and determine the appropriate repair.
  • Ability to research unfamiliar equipment and repair procedures.
  • Experience identifying and sourcing replacement parts.
  • Ability to read and interpret technical manuals, work orders, diagrams, and schematics.
  • Strong commitment to safe work practices.
  • Ability to maintain accurate service and maintenance documentation.
  • Valid driver’s license and a driving record that meets company requirements.
  • Reliable transportation to and from work.
  • Ability to work from Arrow’s yard in Hayward.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Previous experience with an equipment-rental company or construction-equipment service provider.
  • Field service experience repairing equipment at customer or project locations.
  • Experience repairing generators, light towers, skid steers, excavators, golf carts, negative-air machines, portable equipment, and construction tools.
  • Experience supporting equipment check-in, check-out, and yard operations.
  • Familiarity with parts vendors, manufacturer support resources, and equipment suppliers.
  • Experience driving a service vehicle or non-CDL flatbed truck.
  • Experience working in a growing, fast-paced equipment or construction environment.

Skills and Attributes

  • Strong mechanical aptitude
  • Resourceful and independent problem-solving
  • Mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic troubleshooting
  • Ability to work on unfamiliar equipment
  • Strong organization and attention to detail
  • Clear verbal and written communication
  • Ability to manage multiple repairs and priorities
  • Strong teamwork and customer-service skills
  • Willingness to help outside the primary repair function
  • Commitment to quality workmanship and safety

What You’ll Work On

The Field Service Technician will support a diverse and evolving inventory of construction and rental equipment, which may include:

  • Generators
  • Skid steers
  • Excavators
  • Light towers and construction lighting
  • Golf carts
  • Negative-air machines
  • Portable HVAC equipment
  • Small-engine equipment
  • Electrical equipment
  • Construction tools
  • Other rental and construction equipment added as the business grows

The equipment mix will change based on customer and project needs. Success in this position requires curiosity, adaptability, and the ability to determine how equipment works—even when encountering it for the first time.

Why Join Arrow Rental & Supply?
