Why This Role Matters

Why the role exists

The Finance Manager leads the day-to-day finance operation and turns accurate financial information into useful insight. You’ll develop a small team, oversee the core accounting cycle and make sure our controls, systems and reporting remain dependable as the business grows across the UK and Europe.

This is a hands-on leadership role. You’ll be close enough to the detail to spot issues early, while giving senior leaders the analysis, forecasts and context they need to make confident decisions. You’ll also help us get more from Xero and continually improve how the team works.

What success looks like

  • Monthly management accounts are accurate, insightful and delivered to agreed deadlines.
  • The general ledger, balance sheet and supporting reconciliations are complete, controlled and audit-ready.
  • Accounts payable, accounts receivable, VAT and payroll coordination run smoothly and issues are resolved promptly.
  • Finance colleagues receive clear direction, useful coaching and opportunities to build their capability.
  • Leaders receive practical analysis and forecasts that help them understand performance and make decisions.
  • Finance systems and processes become simpler, more efficient and less reliant on manual work.

Lead and develop the team

  • Lead, support and develop a small Finance team across accounts payable, accounts receivable and reporting.
  • Set clear priorities, review work and create a supportive environment where people can build confidence and capability.

Financial reporting and control

  • Prepare and review monthly management accounts, including profit and loss, balance sheet reporting and variance analysis.
  • Maintain oversight of the general ledger, balance-sheet reconciliations and the quality of supporting records.
  • Oversee accounts payable and accounts receivable, stepping into the detail when the team needs support.
  • Maintain strong, proportionate financial controls and make sure agreed processes are followed consistently.
  • Coordinate year-end activity and work closely with external auditors to provide clear, complete information.

Compliance and external partners

  • Ensure VAT returns and other UK finance requirements are accurate and submitted on time.
  • Coordinate with our outsourced payroll provider so payroll information is complete, accurate and delivered to schedule.
  • Build effective relationships with auditors, payroll providers and other finance partners, following queries through to resolution.

Insight and continuous improvement

  • Provide senior leaders and non-finance colleagues with clear financial analysis, forecasts and commercial insight.
  • Explain financial performance in plain language, highlighting risks, opportunities and actions.
  • Improve how we use Xero, helping the team embed consistent ways of working and make confident use of the system.
  • Identify and deliver process improvements that reduce manual effort, strengthen controls and make information easier to access.
  • Support the financial needs of a growing international business, adapting processes as our scale and complexity change.

Essential

  • Part-qualified or recently qualified in CIMA, ACCA or ACA, or equivalent practical experience.
  • Experience managing, coaching or mentoring finance colleagues.
  • Strong working knowledge of Xero.
  • A sound understanding of financial controls, reconciliations and UK VAT requirements.
  • The confidence to interpret financial information and communicate it clearly to non-finance stakeholders.
  • A highly organised, accurate approach, with the ability to manage competing priorities and meet deadlines.
  • A proactive, resilient style and the confidence to take ownership while working collaboratively.

Helpful

  • Experience working in a fast-growing or scaling business.
  • Exposure to finance operations across more than one country, particularly the UK and Europe.
  • Experience improving finance systems, controls or processes.
  • Experience supporting international growth or increasing operational complexity.

Living Our Values

  • Put customers first by recognising that accurate, well-controlled finance helps every team deliver a dependable service.
  • Work as one team by sharing context, supporting colleagues and making finance approachable.
