Job Title: Finance Manager, Malta


Reporting To: Finance Director
Direct Report: Accounts Assistant


Job Purpose

To manage the day-to-day finance function in Malta within a banking/financial services environment, ensuring accurate financial records, effective financial controls, timely reporting and compliance with applicable accounting and regulatory requirements.

The Finance Manager will oversee the Accounts Assistant, coordinate the company’s annual audit process and work closely with internal teams, external auditors, banking/payment partners and regulatory stakeholders. Experience within payments, Electronic Money Institutions (EMIs) or a similar regulated financial services environment is highly desirable.


Key Responsibilities

  • Managing the day-to-day finance operations in Malta
  • Reviewing and overseeing the processing and posting of financial transactions in line with internal controls and company policies
  • Reviewing bank, payment provider and company account reconciliations, ensuring discrepancies are identified and resolved promptly
  • Overseeing accounts payable and accounts receivable processes
  • Managing month-end, quarter-end and year-end financial close processes
  • Preparing and reviewing management accounts, financial reports and supporting schedules
  • Coordinating statutory audits, acting as the primary finance contact for external auditors and ensuring audit requests are managed efficiently and deadlines are met
  • Preparing and reviewing audit schedules, supporting documentation and reconciliations
  • Maintaining appropriate financial controls, processes and accounting records
  • Supporting the preparation and submission of relevant regulatory and compliance reporting
  • Liaising with compliance, risk and other internal teams on finance-related regulatory matters
  • Supporting the finance team in interpreting and implementing changes to applicable accounting and regulatory requirements
  • Monitoring payment and transaction-related financial activity and investigating discrepancies or unusual items
  • Managing relationships with banks, payment service providers, auditors and other external stakeholders
  • Identifying opportunities to improve finance processes, controls and reporting
  • Managing, supporting and developing the Accounts Assistant, including allocating work, reviewing outputs and providing guidance and feedback
  • Ensuring sensitive financial and business information is handled appropriately and confidentially
  • Providing support to senior management and the wider finance function as required
  • Responsible for quarterly VAT returns for UK and Malta entities, as well as calculating commissions for commercial team and introducers.


Skills & Experience Required

  • Strong experience with Xero software
  • Proven experience in a finance or accounting role, ideally within banking, payments, an EMI or another regulated financial services environment
  • Experience with payment transactions, payment service providers and/or electronic money businesses is highly desirable
  • Experience coordinating or supporting external financial audits
  • Good understanding of accounting principles, financial controls and reconciliations
  • Awareness of financial services regulatory and compliance requirements; experience with regulatory reporting is an advantage
  • Experience managing or supervising junior finance team members
  • Strong numerical, analytical and problem-solving skills
  • High attention to detail and accuracy
  • Strong organisational and time-management skills
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel
  • Experience with Xero or similar accounting software
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to work effectively with internal teams and external stakeholders
  • Ability to work independently and take ownership of the finance function while escalating issues appropriately


Qualifications

  • ACCA qualified or part-qualified, ACA, CIMA or equivalent professional accounting qualification
  • Candidates who are close to completing their professional accounting qualification will also be considered
  • Relevant degree or equivalent qualification in Accounting, Finance or a related discipline preferred
  • Relevant experience within financial services, payments or an EMI environment is highly desirable
