Job Title: Network Security Specialist II (Boundary)

Secure and reliable network boundaries are critical to protecting the Air Force enterprise and ensuring uninterrupted mission operations. This position supports the Air Force Intranet Control (AFINC) III Support program by providing network security and boundary protection support for enterprise Air Force network environments.

Working alongside Government personnel and network operations teams, you will help protect Air Force networks by monitoring, maintaining, troubleshooting, and securing critical boundary infrastructure. This role requires a strong combination of networking and cybersecurity experience with the ability to identify potential threats, troubleshoot complex network security issues, and maintain the availability and integrity of mission-critical network services.

In this role, you will provide network security support focused on enterprise boundary protection, cybersecurity operations, network monitoring, incident response, and infrastructure security. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Monitor, operate, maintain, and troubleshoot enterprise network security and boundary protection technologies.
  • Monitor network traffic and security events to identify suspicious activity, potential threats, unauthorized access, and abnormal network behavior.
  • Analyze security alerts and network events to determine potential impact and coordinate appropriate response actions.
  • Configure, maintain, and troubleshoot network security devices and technologies, including firewalls, routers, switches, Intrusion Detection/Prevention Systems (IDS/IPS), and related boundary protection infrastructure.
  • Review firewall rules, access control lists (ACLs), network configurations, and security policies to support secure enterprise operations.
  • Analyze network traffic, logs, alerts, and other cybersecurity data to identify security incidents and potential vulnerabilities.
  • Support investigation, documentation, escalation, and resolution of network security incidents.
  • Troubleshoot complex network connectivity and security issues while maintaining mission availability and cybersecurity requirements.
  • Implement approved configuration changes, security updates, patches, and remediation actions across network security infrastructure.
  • Support vulnerability management and cybersecurity compliance activities associated with network boundary devices.
  • Assist with implementation and validation of Department of Defense and Air Force cybersecurity requirements, including applicable DISA Security Technical Implementation Guides (STIGs).
  • Coordinate with network engineers, system administrators, cybersecurity personnel, and Government stakeholders to resolve security and connectivity issues.
  • Create and maintain technical documentation, incident records, configuration information, troubleshooting procedures, and other operational records.
  • Support change management activities and document actions associated with incidents, problems, and configuration changes.
  • Assist with maintaining situational awareness of enterprise network health, security posture, and emerging cybersecurity threats.
  • Provide timely and professional technical support within a mission-focused, continuous network operations environment.

Shift Requirements

AFINC III provides continuous mission support through a 24-hour operation across three shifts.

Candidates must be willing and able to support day, afternoon/evening, or midnight/overnight operations based on program staffing and mission requirements.

A specific shift is not guaranteed. Shift assignments are based on current program requirements and may change during employment to meet mission and staffing needs.

Required Skills/Education

Education: High School Diploma or GED required.

Years of Experience: Five (5) or more years of experience in network security, network administration, cybersecurity, enterprise networking, or a closely related technical discipline.

Required Qualifications:

  • United States Citizenship.
  • Active Secret Security Clearance.
  • Current Security+ certification or applicable DoD 8140 cybersecurity certification required for the position.
  • Hands-on experience supporting enterprise network security or boundary protection environments.
  • Experience configuring, operating, maintaining, or troubleshooting firewalls, routers, switches, IDS/IPS, or related network security technologies.
  • Strong understanding of TCP/IP, routing, switching, network protocols, ports, services, and enterprise network architecture.
  • Understanding of network security concepts including defense-in-depth, access control, firewall policy, intrusion detection/prevention, and network segmentation.
  • Experience analyzing network traffic, system logs, security alerts, and other technical information to troubleshoot network or cybersecurity issues.
  • Ability to identify, analyze, and resolve complex network security problems.
  • Familiarity with DoD cybersecurity requirements and DISA STIGs.
  • Strong analytical and technical problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to work effectively within a fast-paced, mission-focused network operations environment.
  • Ability and willingness to work any of the program's three operational shifts based on mission requirements.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Previous experience supporting Air Force or Department of Defense enterprise network operations.
  • Experience supporting network boundary protection within a large-scale enterprise environment.
  • Experience with enterprise firewall platforms and network security management technologies.
  • Experience with Intrusion Detection and Prevention Systems (IDS/IPS).
  • Experience with network monitoring, packet analysis, Security Information and Event Management (SIEM), or related cybersecurity tools.
  • Familiarity with vulnerability management and security compliance processes.
  • Experience supporting a Network Operations Center (NOC), Security Operations Center (SOC), or similar continuous operational environment.
  • Relevant Cisco, network security, firewall, or cybersecurity certifications.

Travel: Limited travel may be required in support of program objectives.

Security Clearance Required: Active Secret Security Clearance.

Position Type: Full Time – Three-Shift Operation

Work Location: Gunter Annex, Maxwell AFB, Montgomery, AL (Onsite)
