Position Overview
A well-established flooring distribution company is seeking an experienced Fleet & Equipment Manager to oversee its commercial vehicle fleet, delivery operations, drivers, and material-handling equipment. The fleet includes tractors, trucks, trailers, Moffett/piggyback forklifts, and warehouse forklifts supporting multiple distribution locations and customer job-site deliveries
This hands-on leadership role will oversee fleet maintenance, driver management, DOT compliance, equipment condition, rental and leasing strategy, vendor relationships, and fleet cost control. The ideal candidate combines strong diesel and mechanical expertise with the leadership and analytical skills needed to maintain a safe, reliable, efficient, and professional fleet
Key Responsibilities
- Oversee maintenance, repair, safety, reliability, and overall condition of trucks, tractors, trailers, Moffett/piggyback forklifts, and warehouse equipment
- Lead and manage drivers, setting clear expectations for safety, performance, accountability, vehicle care, and customer service
- Develop and maintain preventive maintenance and inspection programs while coordinating repairs, breakdowns, dealerships, mechanics, and outside vendors
- Maintain high standards for fleet cleanliness, condition, and professional appearance
- Evaluate rental, leasing, and ownership options, including utilization, lease terms, replacement planning, and repair-versus-replace decisions
- Analyze fleet expenses including maintenance, repairs, fuel, tires, parts, leasing, rentals, downtime, and vendor costs to identify efficiency opportunities
- Ensure compliance with applicable DOT/FMCSA requirements, equipment inspections, maintenance records, driver requirements, and transportation safety standards
- Monitor fleet KPIs including downtime, preventive maintenance compliance, repair costs, equipment utilization, safety, and reliability
Qualifications
- 5+ years of fleet, transportation, or fleet maintenance management experience, preferably in distribution, building materials, flooring, construction supply, or a similar delivery-intensive environment
- Strong diesel expertise with hands-on experience working with diesel trucks, heavy equipment, or commercial vehicles required
- Proven experience managing and developing drivers, including performance management, safety, and accountability
- Strong knowledge of Class 7/8 trucks, tractors, trailers, diesel systems, brakes, tires, electrical systems, hydraulics, and related commercial equipment
- Experience analyzing fleet expenses, controlling operating costs, managing vendors, and evaluating rental, lease, purchase, and replacement options
- Working knowledge of DOT/FMCSA compliance, preventive maintenance programs, inspections, maintenance documentation, and transportation safety
- Experience with Moffett, piggyback, truck-mounted forklift, or similar material-handling equipment strongly preferred
- CDL-A, ASE, NAFA, or related certifications are a plus
Compensation & Benefits
- $115,000–$130,000 annually, based on experience and qualifications
- Full-time leadership position overseeing fleet assets, drivers, and transportation operations
