Founding Automation Engineer AI-Native Accounting Infrastructure About Peregrine Peregrine Professional Services is building an AI-native accounting and financial operations company designed to operate more like a technology company than a traditional service firm. We are building internal systems that automate bookkeeping, reporting, compliance, operational workflows, and financial operations through AI agents, workflow orchestration, and automation infrastructure. Our vision is to build the operational infrastructure layer for the next generation of accounting firms. In addition to operating our own accounting firm, we are pursuing a roll-up strategy by acquiring firms and transitioning their operations into this AI-native model. The long-term goal is to create a highly scalable, automation-first platform for accounting and financial operations. We are an early-stage, high-ownership company looking for our first engineering hire to help build this infrastructure from the ground up. The Role This is not a traditional engineering role. You will be the first engineering hire working directly with the founder to architect and build the systems powering the company. You’ll help design: AI agent workflows orchestration systems automation infrastructure internal operational tooling integrations across accounting and AI systems backend workflows and platform infrastructure You will have significant ownership over technical decisions, system architecture, tooling, and implementation strategy. We are looking for someone who: operates with high initiative and ownership communicates clearly and proactively enjoys building systems from scratch thrives in ambiguity and fast-moving environments is deeply interested in AI systems and automation can independently execute without micromanagement wants to help build a company long term Over time, this role has the potential to evolve into technical leadership as the company scales. What You’ll Work On Build AI-driven workflow automation systems Design orchestration layers coordinating AI agents and operational workflows Integrate APIs across accounting software, internal systems, and AI platforms Build event-driven automation pipelines Design monitoring, observability, and reliability systems Translate operational accounting processes into scalable automation systems Build reusable internal infrastructure and tooling Improve operational efficiency through automation and system design Collaborate directly on technical architecture and product direction What Success Looks Like You independently own projects from concept to production You proactively identify operational inefficiencies and automate them You communicate clearly around priorities, blockers, and timelines You move quickly while maintaining reliability and operational quality You are comfortable making decisions with incomplete information You continuously learn and adapt as AI systems evolve You think like a builder and operator, not just an implementer Requirements Strong programming ability, preferably Python Experience building automation systems, backend systems, or workflow pipelines Experience working with APIs and integrations Strong systems thinking and problem-solving ability Ability to work independently with minimal oversight Strong written and verbal communication skills Comfort operating in startup environments with rapid iteration Strong interest in AI systems, automation, and operational infrastructure Nice to Have Experience with AI agents or LLM workflows Experience with orchestration frameworks (LangGraph, Temporal, Airflow, Prefect, etc.) Experience with OpenAI, Anthropic, or related AI APIs Experience with cloud infrastructure and deployment systems Experience in startups or small technical teams Familiarity with accounting, finance, ERP, or operational workflows Experience owning projects end-to-end Interest in future technical leadership responsibilities Why Join First engineering hire with significant ownership Opportunity to shape the company’s technical direction from the beginning Work directly with the founder Build production AI systems solving real operational problems Exposure to AI agents, automation infrastructure, orchestration systems, and operational scaling Opportunity for long-term growth into technical leadership as the company scales
