Summary

First product designer at an early-stage AI startup building software for insurance claims operations. You own end-to-end UX for claims workspaces and dashboards, design human-in-the-loop AI agent interactions, and establish the design system, working fully on-site in New York.

About the Role

Join an early-stage AI company building software for insurance claims operations. As the first product designer, you will shape the user experience for claims teams and help evolve a complex product into an enterprise-ready platform.

What You'll Do

  • Own the end-to-end experience across daily claims workspaces, dashboards, and other customer-facing product surfaces.

  • Use behavioral data, heat maps, discovery calls, and direct user observation to identify opportunities and guide product improvements.

  • Partner with product leadership, forward-deployed engineers, and the engineering team to turn customer problems into clear workflows and implementation-ready designs.

  • Design interactions for AI agents that make their actions, sources, reasoning, and uncertainty understandable, while giving users ways to review or intervene.

  • Lead product experiences from discovery through delivery as the platform develops for larger insurance organizations.

  • Establish design principles and a design system, prototype with AI tools, and evaluate whether design changes help users complete work more easily.

What We're Looking For

  • 5 to 8 years of product design experience, with consistent tenures at technology companies.

  • Experience as a founding designer or the first design hire at an early-stage startup.

  • A UX-first, data-informed approach to simplifying complex workflows, combining product analytics with user research.

  • Experience designing dense, technical software used frequently by operational teams; insurance, claims, healthcare, or other regulated domains are valuable.

  • Experience designing AI and human-in-the-loop workflows and building design systems is a plus.

  • Hands-on experience prototyping with AI tools such as Claude or Lovable.

  • A background focused on product design and complex user experiences, rather than solely visual design or front-end engineering.

  • U.S. work authorization is required. Existing visa transfers are supported, but new visa sponsorship is not available.

Compensation & Benefits

Base salary: $170,000 to $220,000 annually. Visa transfers are supported; new visa sponsorship is not available.

Location

On-site, five days a week in New York, New York.
