Fractional Chief Marketing Officer (CMO)
This position is listed on behalf of a partner company, who manages all applications and next steps. Our partner is looking for a Fractional Chief Marketing Officer (CMO) based in United States.
This is a senior, hands-on marketing leadership opportunity for an experienced executive who can shape strategy while remaining close to execution.
The role will own the marketing direction across brand, content, demand generation, and customer acquisition.
You will work closely with the CEO and a lean internal team to prioritize initiatives and turn growth opportunities into measurable results.
A major focus will be building sustainable organic growth while balancing performance marketing and near-term acquisition needs.
You will use data, experimentation, and market insight to improve funnel performance, strengthen positioning, and maximize marketing ROI.
The role also provides the opportunity to lead agencies, freelancers, and specialized partners while maintaining strategic accountability.
Designed as a fractional engagement, it offers meaningful executive-level impact with approximately 20 hours per week and a flexible schedule.
Accountabilities:
- Develop and own the overall marketing strategy, aligning priorities, positioning, audience segments, and initiatives with business objectives and growth-stage needs.
- Define and refine target audiences, messaging, brand voice, and positioning to strengthen market differentiation and customer engagement.
- Lead customer acquisition and demand-generation strategies across paid, organic, content, SEO, social, email, lifecycle, community, and referral channels.
- Identify the highest-leverage growth opportunities and build a sustainable acquisition model that reduces dependency on paid channels.
- Establish marketing KPIs and reporting frameworks covering CAC, LTV, conversion rates, funnel performance, channel efficiency, and overall marketing ROI.
- Guide content strategy across formats such as blogs, video, social media, and email while ensuring consistency in brand identity and messaging.
- Manage and coordinate agencies, freelancers, contractors, and other marketing partners, providing clear priorities, direction, and performance feedback.
- Establish a regular marketing reporting cadence and communicate progress, challenges, opportunities, and recommendations clearly to executive leadership.
- Continuously test, analyze, and optimize campaigns, messaging, channels, and customer journeys based on data and market feedback.
- Provide strategic leadership while remaining hands-on with execution in a lean, fast-moving environment.
- 8+ years of marketing experience, including senior leadership experience at the VP, Director, CMO, or equivalent level.
- Direct marketing leadership experience in EdTech and/or SaaS, with experience in either B2B or B2C environments required.
- Proven success transitioning organizations from reliance on paid acquisition toward sustainable organic growth through SEO, content, community, referrals, or similar channels.
- Strong understanding of both brand marketing and performance marketing, with the ability to connect long-term brand development to measurable commercial outcomes.
- Demonstrated ability to develop and execute marketing strategies in early-stage, growth-stage, or resource-conscious environments.
- Hands-on experience with marketing analytics, performance measurement, funnel optimization, and data-driven decision-making.
- Experience managing agencies, freelancers, contractors, or small internal marketing teams.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to present recommendations and performance clearly to executive stakeholders.
- Strong autonomy, strategic judgment, and the ability to prioritize effectively without extensive supervision.
- Must be based in the United States and authorized to work in the U.S.
- Availability for approximately 20 hours per week, with flexibility to align with team working hours.
- Experience scaling an early-stage or bootstrapped company is preferred.
- An established network of trusted specialists or agencies across areas such as design, paid media, SEO, or content is a plus.
- Monthly compensation of $5,000–$7,000, commensurate with experience.
- Approximately 20 hours per week with a flexible schedule.
- Fractional, contract-based engagement structured as a 1099 rather than a full-time employee position.
- Remote work from anywhere in the United States.
- Opportunity to operate at the executive level and directly influence marketing strategy and business growth.
- High degree of autonomy and flexibility within a lean, collaborative environment.
- Opportunity to build sustainable acquisition channels, strengthen the brand, and directly influence measurable growth.
