Role Overview
We are seeking an analytical, detail-driven Freight Analyst to join our Global Supply Chain team in a dedicated remote night-shift capacity. In this role, you will work in direct real-time alignment with our Canada-based trading, logistics, and ocean freight desks during North American operating hours.
You will analyze multi-lane ocean and inland freight data, audit total landed freight costs, monitor vessel and container movements, track international carrier performance, and build business intelligence models that drive cost savings and operational efficiency across high-volume containerized agricultural export programs.
Key Responsibilities
1. Freight Cost Analytics & Landed Cost Modeling
- Audit and analyze ocean freight tariffs, inland rail rates, drayage charges, and carrier surcharges (e.g., BAF, ETS/carbon tax, ISPS, terminal handling) across major North American export lanes.
- Compute and model Total Landed Cost (TLC) scenarios to evaluate trade-offs between ocean carriers, transloaders, and port routings (e.g., Vancouver, Montreal, US West/East Coast ports).
- Audit freight invoices against carrier contract rate sheets to identify rate mismatches, billing discrepancies, and unauthorized accessorial charges before payment approval.
2. Vessel Schedules, Equipment Availability & Risk Mitigation
- Monitor real-time vessel schedules, cut-off dates, transshipment hubs, and destination port congestion to anticipate and mitigate shipment delays.
- Track carrier equipment positioning, empty container release status, and rail intermodal transit windows to keep bulk and bagged cargo moving on schedule.
- Maintain oversight of carrier free-time terms, monitoring container dwell times to actively reduce Detention and Demurrage (DDSM) exposure at loading terminals and destination discharge ports.
3. Market Intelligence & Carrier Procurement Support
- Continuously track global ocean container freight indices, market trends, blank sailings, and bunker fuel fluctuations.
- Synthesize rate market movements into actionable intelligence to support logistics management during carrier volume allocations, tender cycles, and rate negotiations.
- Maintain centralized rate repositories, contract validity trackers, and service agreement databases.
4. KPI Dashboards & Performance Reporting
- Design, automate, and maintain weekly and monthly logistics dashboards tracking core KPIs: freight cost per metric ton, on-time departure/arrival rates, carrier booking acceptance ratios, and transit variance analysis.
- Consolidate complex, multi-origin logistics datasets into clean visual reports for trade desk heads and executive leadership using Advanced Excel and Power BI.
- Identify systemic supply chain bottlenecks and deliver data-backed recommendations for routing or carrier adjustments.
5. Real-Time Stakeholder & Desk Collaboration
- Function as an active analytical partner during Canadian business hours, collaborating directly with Canada trade desks, export documentation specialists, forwarding partners, and ocean line representatives.
- Coordinate promptly with cross-functional teams to resolve operational exceptions, rolled bookings, routing changes, and destination customs holds.
Candidate Profile & Qualifications
- Education: Minimum of, Bachelors degree Data Analytics, Supply Chain Management, or a related discipline. Degree within Shipping and EXIM industry will be preffered.
- Experience: 3 to 8 years of hands-on experience in freight analytics, international ocean logistics, or maritime carrier operations. Experience with bulk/containerized agricultural commodities or FMCG preferred.
- Shift Flexibility: Willingness and capability to work consistent permanent night shifts 07:30 PM to 04:30 AM IST from a dedicated, distraction-free home office setup with reliable high-speed internet and power backup.
- Trade & Shipping Knowledge: Strong understanding of maritime container shipping, Incoterms 2020 (FOB, CFR, CIF), Bill of Lading structures, freight tariffs, multimodal transit (rail/truck/ocean), and port operations.
- Technical & Analytics Stack:
- Advanced MS Excel: Nested formulas, XLOOKUP, dynamic arrays, Pivot Tables, and financial/cost modeling.
- BI & Data Tools: Practical proficiency in Power BI (DAX, Power Query) or SQL for dataset querying and reporting is strongly preferred.
- Working familiarity with enterprise ERP platforms (e.g., Microsoft Dynamics 365, SAP) or Transport Management Systems (TMS).
- Core Competencies: Strong quantitative reasoning, proactive problem-solving under market volatility, and excellent written and verbal English communication skills for interfacing with North American stakeholders.
