Full-Stack Engineer, Frontend and Design
Summary
Remote internship at Recollia, an AI-powered study tool for medical students. You own how the product looks and feels: designing and building student-facing web and mobile features, the design system, and AI interaction states, plus the backend APIs and database tables those features need.
Location: Remote · Type: Internship
About Recollia
Recollia helps medical students learn medicine and remember it. An AI tutor, practice questions, spaced repetition, a study planner and viva prep, on the web and on phones. Students pay for it and use it every day, so how it feels matters as much as whether it works.
The role
You will own how Recollia looks, moves and feels, and you will build it end to end. Most of your time goes into the frontend: taking a rough idea or a design and shipping an interface that feels deliberate, fast and calm. When a feature needs an endpoint or a table behind it, you build that too.
This is not a role where someone hands you finished mockups. You will make design calls, defend them, and ship them to real students within days.
What you will work on
- Student-facing features on web and mobile, from first sketch to production.
- Our design system: type, colour, spacing, motion, and keeping web and mobile consistent.
- Making AI feel good to use: streaming answers, waiting states, and what happens when things fail.
- The small states most products skip: empty, loading, error, first run, offline.
- Accessibility and performance, treated as part of design rather than cleanup.
- The APIs and data your features need, working with the backend team.
You
- Have a portfolio. Live products, case studies or design work that shows what you built and why it looks the way it does. This is required; we do not review applications without one.
- Build modern web interfaces well, and know CSS properly (layout, typography, motion, responsive design), not only component libraries.
- Can look at a screen and say exactly what is wrong with it, then fix it yourself.
- Are comfortable in Figma, enough to explore before you code.
- Have built at least one backend API with a database behind it, and can explain it.
- Can explain your own code line by line, and read code you did not write.
- Use AI tools daily and catch what they get wrong.
Moves you to the top of the pile
- Something you designed and built that people actually use.
- An app on a store, any app.
- Motion or interaction work you are proud of.
- You have used Recollia and can point at a screen that feels off, and say why.
What we value
- Taste, backed by reasons. "It feels better" is a start, not an answer.
- Simple over clever. The simpler option wins unless the complex one earns its place.
- Ownership. You see a feature through, including the parts nobody asked for.
- Clear written communication, and raising blockers early.
