Job Summary

We are looking for an experienced Senior Full Stack Engineer with strong expertise in payment systems, Java/backend development, REST APIs, microservices, distributed systems, and modern frontend technologies.

The ideal candidate should have hands-on experience working with Wire, ACH, and RTP payment systems, along with a strong understanding of backend processing, concurrency, thread-safe programming, event-driven architectures, and API integrations.

The role involves developing scalable and resilient payment applications across the full technology stack, including backend services, APIs, event-driven components, and frontend applications using Angular, React, or Vue. Experience with Kubernetes, Docker, APIC, and spec-driven development is highly desirable.

Key Responsibilities

1. Payment Systems Development

  • Design, develop, and maintain applications supporting Wire, ACH, and RTP payment processing.
  • Understand and implement end-to-end payment transaction workflows.
  • Develop solutions for payment initiation, validation, processing, routing, status management, exceptions, and reconciliation.
  • Handle transaction failures, retries, reversals, duplicate transactions, and timeout scenarios.
  • Ensure payment applications are reliable, scalable, secure, and performant.
  • Collaborate with payment-domain SMEs and product teams to translate business requirements into technical solutions.

2. Backend Development

  • Design and develop robust backend services using modern programming languages and frameworks.
  • Build scalable backend processing components for high-volume financial transactions.
  • Develop reusable business logic and service components.
  • Implement appropriate error handling, validation, logging, and monitoring.
  • Optimize backend services for performance, scalability, and reliability.
  • Participate in code reviews and ensure adherence to enterprise coding standards.
  • Troubleshoot complex production and application issues.

3. API & Microservices Development

  • Design and develop RESTful APIs and microservices.
  • Build scalable and loosely coupled services using microservices architecture.
  • Develop API contracts, request/response models, validation, and error-handling mechanisms.
  • Integrate internal and external payment systems through APIs.
  • Work with APIC (API Connect) and related API management/integration capabilities.
  • Implement API security, authentication, authorization, rate limiting, and versioning.
  • Ensure APIs are backward compatible and meet performance requirements.
  • Support API monitoring, troubleshooting, and production operations.

4. Distributed Systems & Concurrency

  • Design and develop highly available distributed applications.
  • Apply strong understanding of distributed systems concepts to payment-processing solutions.
  • Design applications to handle high transaction volumes and concurrent requests.
  • Implement thread-safe and concurrency-aware solutions.
  • Identify and resolve race conditions, deadlocks, synchronization issues, and resource contention.
  • Apply appropriate concurrency patterns and synchronization mechanisms.
  • Design resilient systems capable of handling partial failures and service dependencies.
  • Implement appropriate retry, timeout, circuit breaker, and fallback strategies.
  • Ensure transaction processing maintains consistency and integrity across distributed services.

5. Event-Driven Architecture

  • Design and develop event-driven payment processing solutions.
  • Implement asynchronous communication between microservices and enterprise systems.
  • Work with messaging/event-streaming platforms where applicable.
  • Design reliable event-processing workflows.
  • Handle duplicate events, retries, ordering, idempotency, and failure scenarios.
  • Ensure asynchronous processing meets business and transaction-processing requirements.
  • Contribute to modernization of traditional synchronous applications into event-driven architectures.

6. Frontend Development

  • Develop responsive and user-friendly web applications using modern frontend technologies.
  • Work with one or more of:
  • Angular
  • React
  • Vue.js
  • Integrate frontend applications with REST APIs and backend microservices.
  • Implement reusable UI components and application workflows.
  • Handle client-side validation, error handling, and API integration.
  • Work closely with UX/UI teams and backend engineers.
  • Ensure applications meet performance, security, accessibility, and usability standards.

7. Containerization & Kubernetes

  • Containerize applications using Docker.
  • Deploy and manage microservices in Kubernetes-based environments.
  • Work with Kubernetes concepts including:
  • Pods
  • Deployments
  • Services
  • ConfigMaps
  • Secrets
  • Ingress
  • Scaling
  • Troubleshoot application and container-related issues.
  • Support deployment, configuration, scaling, and monitoring of applications.
  • Work with platform/DevOps teams to improve containerized application delivery.

8. APIC & Enterprise Integrations

  • Develop and maintain integrations using API Connect (APIC).
  • Configure and consume APIs across internal and external systems.
  • Support API gateway and integration requirements.
  • Collaborate with integration teams to troubleshoot API connectivity and transaction issues.
  • Ensure APIs follow enterprise security, governance, and design standards.
  • Support integration between payment systems, microservices, databases, and third-party platforms.

9. Spec-Driven Development

  • Apply spec-driven development practices where applicable.
  • Translate functional and technical specifications into API contracts, implementation tasks, and test scenarios.
  • Work with OpenAPI/Swagger specifications and contract-first API development.
  • Ensure API implementations remain aligned with approved specifications.
  • Collaborate with product, architecture, and QA teams to identify gaps between specifications and implementation.
  • Promote reusable API contracts and consistent development standards.

10. Testing & Quality

  • Develop unit, integration, API, and end-to-end tests.
  • Validate payment transaction flows across multiple services.
  • Implement automated testing practices to improve regression coverage.
  • Test concurrency, performance, resiliency, and failure scenarios.
  • Validate API contracts and integration points.
  • Participate in code reviews and quality improvement initiatives.
  • Troubleshoot defects across frontend, backend, API, and infrastructure layers.

11. DevOps & Production Support

  • Collaborate with DevOps/SRE teams on application deployment and production operations.
  • Participate in CI/CD processes and automated deployments.
  • Support application monitoring, logging, and troubleshooting.
  • Analyze production incidents and perform root cause analysis.
  • Implement improvements to application reliability and operational efficiency.
  • Support release activities, deployment validation, and rollback procedures.

12. Security & Reliability

  • Follow secure coding and secure API development practices.
  • Protect sensitive financial and customer data.
  • Implement authentication and authorization mechanisms.
  • Ensure appropriate access controls and data protection.
  • Design applications for high availability and fault tolerance.
  • Implement resiliency patterns for payment processing.
  • Ensure applications meet enterprise security, compliance, and reliability requirements.

Required Skills & Qualifications

Must-Have

  • 6+ years of professional software development experience.
  • Strong experience with payment systems, particularly:
  • Wire
  • ACH
  • RTP
  • Strong experience developing REST APIs and microservices.
  • Strong understanding of distributed systems.
  • Strong understanding of concurrency and thread-safe design.
  • Hands-on experience with backend processing and high-volume transaction systems.
  • Experience with event-driven architecture.
