Full-Stack Software Engineer Lead - Night Shift

Posted Updated
Discussion
The Full-Stack Software Engineer, Lead is a hands-on technical leadership role accountable for the design, development and delivery of secure, scalable web applications and APIs on AWS. The role combines direct contribution of production-quality code with technical direction for a team of software engineers, setting the architectural standards, engineering practices and automation that the team builds against. Working within an Agile product team, the role translates business and product requirements into well-designed technical solutions across the front end, back end, data and cloud layers. This role exists to raise the engineering quality and delivery velocity of the Institute's digital products while ensuring solutions meet security, data privacy and operational readiness requirements.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

Hands-On Software Development and Delivery

· Remain hands-on with development, contributing production-quality code and developing critical or complex components across the technology stack.

· Implement and support scalable back-end applications, RESTful APIs, microservices, serverless services and enterprise integrations.

· Build responsive, accessible and intuitive front-end experiences, working closely with UX/UI designers to transform Figma designs, wireframes and prototypes into high-quality user interfaces.

· Design and implement application data access patterns across SQL and NoSQL data stores.

Technical Leadership and Architecture

· Serve as the expert for software implementation initiatives, providing technical direction and ensuring solutions align with product requirements, architecture standards, security requirements and engineering best practices.

· Support the architecture, testing and deployment of API and web applications on AWS.

· Create and maintain coding standards, architectural guidelines and reusable components to ensure consistency and maintainability of web applications and APIs.

· Periodically evaluate systems for improvement, recommending refactors, automation and tooling that enhance performance and developer productivity.

Team Leadership and Mentoring

· Manage a team of software engineers, including goal setting, regular feedback, performance management and career development.

· Mentor engineers through code review, pair programming and design review while remaining an active software developer.

· Promote the adoption of modern front-end and back-end engineering practices across the team.

Quality Engineering, CI/CD and Automation

· Ensure quality and ease of deployment by writing thorough unit, integration and end-to-end tests using JUnit and comparable test libraries.

· Contribute to CI/CD pipelines and automation strategies using tools such as GitHub Actions, Bitrise or Jenkins.

· Champion automated testing and repeatable deployment as the default across the team's delivery.

Production Support and Problem Resolution

· Investigate and resolve complex functionality problems and defects, providing advanced troubleshooting and support.

· Review support requests and identify opportunities to prevent recurring issues.

· Support production releases and ensure solutions meet operational readiness, cybersecurity, monitoring, disaster recovery and support requirements.

Agile Delivery and Stakeholder Partnership

· Participate in Agile ceremonies, including daily stand-ups, sprint planning, reviews and retrospectives.

· Collaborate with the product team to translate business requirements, product requirements and user stories into well-designed technical solutions.

JOB COMPETENCIES (Skills & Abilities)

· Technical expertise: Strong full-stack development capability across front-end, back-end, APIs, databases and cloud environments, with the depth to make and defend architectural decisions.

· Decision quality and problem solving: Diagnoses complex and ambiguous design and production problems, and selects solutions that balance delivery speed against maintainability, security and total cost of ownership.

· Analytical: Applies structured analysis to performance, data and integration problems; reaches conclusions from evidence rather than assumption.

· Complexity: Operates confidently across multiple systems, integration points and environments, and manages the dependencies between them.

· Independence and autonomy: Works with minimal supervision, sets direction for own work and the team's, and escalates with a recommendation rather than an open question.

· Leadership: Provides technical direction and sets the engineering standard; influences through demonstrated competence and clear reasoning rather than positional authority alone.

· Mentoring and coaching: Develops engineers through code review, pairing and structured feedback; measures own success partly by the capability of the team.

· Collaboration: Partners effectively with product, UX/UI, security, infrastructure and business stakeholders, including across time zones and sites.

· Communication: Explains technical trade-offs clearly and concisely to both engineering peers and non-technical stakeholders, in writing and verbally.

· Accountability: Owns outcomes end to end, through production and into support, and stands behind the team's delivery.

· Time management: Balances hands-on delivery against leadership responsibilities across concurrent priorities without allowing either to lapse.

· Computer and technology: Advanced proficiency with Git, CI/CD tooling, containers, automated testing frameworks and modern DevOps practice.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS (Knowledge & Experience)

· Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Information Technology or a related discipline, or equivalent professional experience. (Required)

· 10+ years of professional software development experience. (Required)

· Demonstrated experience leading technical teams or complex software initiatives while remaining an active developer. (Required)

· Strong experience with modern front-end technologies such as React, Angular or Vue.js, and Next or Nuxt, together with JavaScript/TypeScript, HTML and CSS. (Required)

· Strong experience with one or more back-end technologies such as Java, Python, Node.js or equivalent, and a strong understanding of REST APIs, microservices, distributed systems, event-driven architectures and integration patterns. (Required)

· Demonstrated experience designing and developing applications on AWS, including serverless services such as AWS Lambda. (Required)

· Experience with SQL and NoSQL databases, data modelling and query optimisation; and with Git, CI/CD, automated testing, containers and modern DevOps practices. (Required)

· Strong knowledge of application security, API security, authentication and authorisation, and OWASP principles; experience working within Agile product development teams. (Required)
