Full Stack WordPress Developer
Summary
Full stack WordPress developer at Boylen, a 30-year Adelaide web design and marketing agency, building and maintaining client websites and web apps: custom themes, plugins and Gutenberg blocks in PHP, third-party integrations, hosting troubleshooting, plus AI-assisted development with tools like Claude Code.
Boylen is an Adelaide web development, design and marketing agency with more than 30 years behind it and 500+ clients across Australia. The work is varied, the clients are good, and the team is supportive, welcoming and inclusive.
We’re looking for a full stack web developer with a WordPress focus who’s comfortable on both the front end and back end. You’ll need solid hands-on coding experience and a genuine understanding of the code you write and maintain.
What you’ll be doing
Building and maintaining client websites and web applications, mostly on WordPress
Writing custom themes, plugins and Gutenberg blocks
Integrating websites with third-party systems such as booking platforms, CRMs, inventory and payment providers
Troubleshooting and debugging across the full stack, including hosting environments
Reading, maintaining and upgrading PHP code to current standards
Using AI-assisted tools such as Claude Code to speed up development, testing and code review
Working with designers, project managers and other developers to plan and deliver new features
Taking on complex, custom projects that go well beyond off-the-shelf builds
What we’re looking for
Commercial experience writing code by hand, with the ability to read, understand and debug code written by others
Proven WordPress development experience beyond off-the-shelf themes, including work with WordPress core, hooks and backend programming, not just HTML/CSS or page builders
Strong PHP skills, including object-oriented PHP and modernising legacy code
Proficiency in HTML, CSS and JavaScript
Working knowledge of MySQL and writing database queries
Experience building custom Gutenberg blocks, either natively or with ACF (Advanced Custom Fields)
Experience integrating systems through APIs, webhooks and data syncing
Practical experience with AI-assisted development tools, with the coding knowledge to review, test and correct what they produce
A working understanding of hosting environments, and the confidence to deploy and troubleshoot
Strong attention to detail and a solid grasp of UX and web design principles
A degree in web development, software engineering or similar, or equivalent experience
Unrestricted working rights in Australia
Nice to have
WooCommerce experience
Experience with Laravel, React or other modern frameworks
Git-based workflows and deployment pipelines
A fondness for dogs (we have a pup in the office on Fridays)
What we offer
A competitive salary, a team that collaborates and has a laugh, and a modern office in Fullarton with great views and easy parking. We’re actively building AI tools into how we work, so you’ll have room to bring ideas and shape how we use them.
How to apply
Please apply with your resume and a cover letter outlining your WordPress, PHP and AI tooling experience. Include links to sites you’ve built, along with a GitHub profile or code samples that show your own work. Shortlisted applicants will complete a short technical discussion or code review as part of the interview.
