Functional Integration Lead - Missile
Job Title: Functional Integration Lead - Missile
Please note: Automatic promotion is not guaranteed
Dynamic working: 5 days per week on-site, due to workload classification
The opportunity:
An opportunity has arisen for a Functional Integration Lead within the Integration and Missile Validation function. Reporting directly to the Functional and Electrical Integration Lead, you will be responsible for owning and leading the day-to-day delivery of functional integration and system verification activities on the programme, including all early integration and then formal Proving activities.
The project is entering an exciting phase as it enters the Development Cycle; with early hardware expected to be delivered this year. There will be opportunities to get hands on with early hardware, working closely with equipment/software teams and problem-solving integration issues. No two days will be the same and there is a great sense of tangible satisfaction when integration issues are resolved and things start working.
The overall Proving team also has been built around the philosophy that everyone is a Functional Integration engineer first and trial engineer second. Therefore, as one of the people who understands the intricacies of the missile, there will be plenty of opportunities to work with the trial teams and helping them in the run up and during the trials.
As a tri-nation project, there will also be opportunities to travel internally in the UK, to work closely with the Software engineering team in Filton but also to France and Italy. Italy in particular will host a Compatibility bench, so there will be an opportunity to help them set up their testing facility.
You will interface with different project customers and stakeholders and will be required to have a hands-on and practical approach in the planning and conduct of proving activities. You will therefore need to build up a deep knowledge of system and subsystem functionality and behaviours, alongside a proactive, dynamic and diligent work ethic.
Key Responsibilities of the role are:
Plan and deliver integration and verification/proving activities to meet programme milestones and support certification/clearance for trials and operations.
Translate system/equipment requirements into comprehensive integration/proving strategies
Lead integration campaigns ensuring adherence to procedures and safety requirements
Provide programme governance for integration and verification — approve test plans, major risk mitigations, and final readiness for trials/certification
Liaise with suppliers and test facilities, present integration progress, test results and issues confidently and clearly to customers and programme leaders.
What we’re looking for from you:
Whilst a broad understanding of engineering is required, Functional Integration engineers are expected to work proactively to understand the System, identify issues and bring experts in to resolve the issues.
A competent engineer who can deliver an appropriate balance of technical delivery and strategic programme management.
Comfortable with uncertainty with a willingness to take calculated risks
Able to make decisions, sometimes without complete information
A proactive problem solver who can anticipate challenges, take initiatives to address these, and can adapt solutions as new information appears
Passionate and enjoys complex challenges
An innovative, creative and practical thinker who can shape how proving is done in the future
An effective communicator, able to communicate decisions, priorities and expectations efficiently and clearly.
A leader who is able to mentor and upskill the next generation of functional integration engineers.
