General Manager: Joe Vieira Trucking Ltd.


The BEST Group Ltd. is a group of Bermudian companies providing services in the fleet, freight, logistics, shipping, trucking, and warehousing industries and has an immediate vacancy for a General Manager to lead the operations of Joe Vieira Trucking on a full-time basis.



The General Manager is a hands-on operational leader responsible for overseeing the day-to-day activities of the trucking division, including transportation scheduling, fleet and equipment management, warehouse and storage operations, inventory, employee leadership, health and safety, customer service, and business development. The successful candidate will play a critical role in driving operational efficiency, profitability, compliance, and customer satisfaction while fostering a high-performing team culture.


Main Responsibilities:

1. Day-to-Day Operations

  • Plan and coordinate daily trucking operations to ensure all scheduled work is completed efficiently and meets customer expectations.
  • Prepare the following day’s schedule by 5:00pm, including clear work instructions and time allocations for drivers and assistants.
  • Monitor employee availability and allocate resources according to operational requirements and customer demand.
  • Identify scheduling conflicts proactively and implement practical solutions to maintain service delivery.
  • Maintain regular communication with dispatched drivers regarding job progress, estimated completion times, delays, and additional work requirements.
  • Ensure effective communication with customers regarding delays or changes to scheduled services.
  • Liaise with LIC Warehouse and BEST Shipping regarding delivery documentation, discrepancies, and next-day delivery planning.
  • Assist with warehouse and inventory activities as required.
  • Ensure all drivers and driver assistants comply with company policies, including uniform requirements and operational procedures.



2. Billing

  • Provide accurate trucking and labour cost information to the Billing Assistant within required timelines.
  • Ensure trucking and labour hours are captured accurately following completion of each job.
  • Assist with billing queries and resolve discrepancies relating to operational costs.
  • Ensure job information, timesheets, and supporting documentation are completed accurately and submitted on time.
  • Maintain accurate records to support effective billing and reporting processes.



3. Inventory

  • Assist with the management and maintenance of equipment, tools, and operational resources.
  • Inspect equipment and report defects, damages, or maintenance requirements.
  • Ensure tool bags, equipment, forklifts, and vehicles are properly checked in and checked out.
  • Ensure equipment checklists are completed and submitted as required.
  • Coordinate equipment maintenance requests and follow up on outstanding repairs.
  • Support initiatives to minimise equipment downtime and operational disruptions.



4. Damages

  • Manage and report damages relating to company vehicles, customer property, and goods.
  • Complete required accident and damage documentation in line with company procedures.
  • Assist the Claims Department with investigations and resolution of damage-related matters.
  • Identify opportunities to reduce damages and improve operational practices.
  • Escalate significant incidents to the Head of Operations where required.



5. Business Development and Key Accounts

  • Identify opportunities to strengthen existing customer relationships and support business growth.
  • Identify customer needs and operational improvements that enhance service delivery.
  • Maintain positive relationships with recurring and strategic customers.
  • Support customer appreciation initiatives and attend customer meetings when required.
  • Communicate potential business opportunities and improvement areas to the Head of Operations.



6. Health and Safety

  • Promote and maintain a strong safety culture across trucking and warehouse operations.
  • Ensure compliance with company health and safety policies, government regulations, and required safety standards.
  • Conduct regular safety inspections and hazard assessments.
  • Address and document safety concerns or policy violations promptly.
  • Ensure required certifications and safety documentation are maintained.
  • Support accident reporting processes and continuous safety improvements.



7. Management

  • Supervise and support Truck Drivers, Truck Driver Assistants, and Customer Service Agents.
  • Manage employee schedules, leave approvals, and timesheet approvals.
  • Ensure direct reports maintain required certifications and operational requirements.
  • Provide input into performance management, recruitment, training, and employee development processes.
  • Support employee engagement initiatives and contribute towards building a high-performance team culture.
  • Address performance concerns through coaching and corrective action processes where required.



8. Customer Service

  • Provide professional and responsive service to customers and internal stakeholders.
  • Resolve customer concerns and ensure effective communication throughout service delivery.
  • Maintain strong customer relationships and contribute to customer satisfaction initiatives.
  • Identify opportunities to improve customer experience and service standards.
  • Represent Joe Vieira Trucking professionally and ensure customer expectations are consistently met.


Minimum Qualifications and Experience

Mandatory:

  • Minimum 3 to 4 years' experience in a supervisory or management role.
  • Minimum 3 to 4 years' experience within transportation, logistics, trucking, or operations management.
  • Valid Heavy Truck Driver's Licence.
  • Valid Counterbalance Forklift Certification.
  • Ability to obtain a dock pass (seaport pass) if required.
  • Personal Information Protection Act (PIPA) Certification.
  • Strong leadership, planning, scheduling, and problem-solving abilities.
  • Experience managing teams, operational performance, and customer relationships.
  • Excellent communication, organisational, and time management skills.


Advantageous:

  • Bachelor's degree in Business Management, Logistics, Supply Chain Management, or a related field.
  • First Aid and CPR Certification.
  • Experience with fleet management, warehousing, inventory control, and operational budgeting.
  • Knowledge of Bermuda's transportation, logistics, and health and safety regulations.
