GIS Specialist

This Interdisciplinary (Geographer/Biologist/Physical Scientist/Cartographer) (GIS Specialist) position is located in the National Trails National Park Service office, in the Administrative Division.

Assist in the design, development, and management of the GIS database, the conversion of thematic source maps from analog to digital form, augmenting the database by digitizing mapped information, importing existing digital data or converting data, documenting work through metadata. Design and develop Global Positioning System (GPS) data dictionaries, spatial data inventories, cross linkages to ensure software and data structure compatibility. Ensure that the correct and appropriate application of geographic and cartographic concepts and principles are applied to database construction, analyses, and production of high quality digital and hardcopy GIS products. Adapt standard techniques and modifies methods of graphical presentation of complex trail/program issues, GIS data, and analyses. Creates draft and presentation quality output products. Implement data documentation procedures and data distribution using appropriate technologies, e.g. the Internet, hardcopy, digital. Maintain hardware, peripherals, GPS units, network, and GIS operating systems. Executes a program to ensure the security and currency of GIS hardware and software including system administration and maintenance. Participate in professional meetings, workshops, conferences, and symposia dealing with GIS and related topics and assist in developing presentations for conferences, writes articles about uses and applications of GIS to trail/program administration.

Time-in-grade does not apply to new excepted service appointments and must be met by the closing date of this announcement. You will be required to operate a government (or private) motor vehicle as part of your official duties; a valid driver's license is required. You will be required to submit a Motor Vehicle Operator's License and Driving Record. You must also submit (within a State sealed envelope or submitted directly by the State authorities), and at your own expense, all certified driving records from all States that disclose all valid driver's licenses, whether current or past, possessed by you. You may be required to complete training and operate a four-wheel drive vehicle. You will be required to wear a uniform and comply with the National Park Service uniform standards. A uniform allowance will be provided. You may be required to work on-call, evenings, weekends, holidays, overtime and shift work. You may be required to travel overnight away from home up to 10 nights per month. You must obtain a government charge card for travel purposes. You may be required to complete training and obtain/maintain a government charge card with travel and/or purchase authority. You must have the ability to lift up to 50 lbs.
