Greybull Stewardship, CFO
Description
Greybull Stewardship
Chief Financial Officer
Greybull Stewardship is conducting a confidential search for a Chief Financial Officer for one of its portfolio companies, a growing services business with a large hourly workforce. The company has a clear operating plan and an active program of small acquisitions.
Founded in 2010, Greybull is a US-based private investment firm dedicated to helping smaller, established businesses scale toward their full potential. The team is comprised of multi-disciplinary operators providing a suite of tailored resources and strategic guidance extending beyond just capital. Greybull is known for its successful engagement with the “pre-middle market”, making majority investments in profitable companies with under $5,000,000 in EBITDA. To date, the firm manages approximately $500M in assets, partnering with a diverse collection of companies in the software, education, franchise, and specialty manufacturing spaces; and invests out of three funds.
As a private equity-backed company, sustained profitability is a priority. In the years ahead, growth will result from operating efficiency, better use of AI and data across the business, continued acquisitions, and a stronger approach to managing and retaining hourly talent.
Reporting to the CEO, the Chief Financial Officer (CFO) is a member of the executive leadership team. The CFO oversees three functions, each with an established leader in place: accounting, human resources and recruiting, and acquisitions. This is a strategic role, not a controller role. The CFO works closely with the CEO on planning, cost management, and deal strategy, and is expected to use AI tools to cover much of the FP&A work that would traditionally require additional staff. This CFO opportunity is fully remote.
CFO Job Duties and Responsibilities:
- Partner with the CEO to develop and execute on business strategies that improve profitability and maximize the company’s enterprise value.
- Lead the three department heads (accounting, human resources and recruiting, and acquisitions), setting clear goals for each function while giving those leaders room to run their areas.
- Own financial planning and analysis, using AI tools such as Claude and automation to deliver forecasting, budgeting, and scenario modeling without adding headcount.
- Build and oversee labor cost planning and reporting for a large hourly workforce, including wage rates, scheduling efficiency, and overtime.
- Partner with HR leadership on hourly workforce strategy, including hiring, retention, pay structure, and employment compliance.
- Design and implement a performance bonus structure tied to clear operating metrics.
- Oversee the month-end close, financial controls, and reporting through a strong, established accounting manager.
- Identify and drive cost reductions and operating efficiencies alongside the operations leadership team.
- Alongside the CEO, guide acquisition strategy and oversee diligence and integration, supporting the acquisitions lead on deal execution.
- Manage cash, treasury, banking relationships, and insurance.
- Prepare for and present at board meetings, and help manage the relationship with private equity investors and lenders.
- Be an active participant on and contributor to the company’s executive team.
- Ensure compliance with local, state, and federal financial, tax, and employment reporting requirements.
CFO Qualifications:
- Minimum 8-10 years of experience in financial management leadership, with increasing responsibilities, including time as a CFO or senior finance leader in a business with a large hourly workforce, such as multi-unit restaurants, hospitality, retail, or services.
- Track record of driving profitability and cost discipline.
- Experience working with private equity and private equity-backed companies.
- Experience managing through M&A, including small and mid-sized acquisitions and post-close integration.
- Experience overseeing HR alongside finance, or working closely with HR on workforce planning and compensation.
- Experience leading other leaders, with excellent management and organizational skills.
- Hands-on fluency with AI tools and automation in finance and reporting work, and proficiency with present-day accounting systems.
- Strong financial analytical capabilities, with decisions and recommendations supported by data.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills. Direct and collaborative in nature.
- Degree in Business Administration, Accounting, or Finance.
