Hands-On Engineering Manager / Technical Lead - Golang / AWS
Salary: 210k base + Super
We’re looking for a highly technical Engineering Manager / Technical Lead to join a well-established Australian digital business with a large-scale, high-traffic technology environment. This is not a hands-off management role. We’re looking for someone who is still close to the technology — ideally a strong Golang/AWS engineer who has progressed into technical leadership, Staff Engineering or Engineering Management and still enjoys getting involved in architecture, design and code. You’ll lead and support a small team of engineers while helping shape engineering standards and contributing to the technical direction of modern, cloud-native platforms. The Role You’ll work across a modern AWS, Golang and event-driven/serverless environment, balancing hands-on engineering with technical leadership and people development. You’ll be responsible for:
- Leading and mentoring a team of approximately 4–6 engineers
- Remaining hands-on with engineering, architecture and technical problem solving
- Providing technical direction across Golang and AWS-based platforms
- Coaching Senior Engineers and Technical Leads
- Driving engineering excellence across observability, resilience, testing and shared tooling
- Contributing to architecture and solution design
- Improving engineering standards and development practices
- Working closely with Product, Engineering and Delivery teams
- Helping remove technical and organisational blockers
- Supporting recruitment, onboarding and development of engineers
- Building a high-performing and collaborative engineering culture
You may currently be an Engineering Manager, Technical Lead, Lead Engineer or Staff Engineer. We're more interested in your ability to lead engineers while remaining technically hands-on than your exact job title.
Ideally you'll bring:
- Strong commercial Golang engineering experience
- Strong experience building solutions on AWS
- Experience with event-driven, distributed and/or serverless architectures
- A strong software engineering and architecture background
- Experience leading, mentoring or coaching engineers
- The ability to contribute technically rather than purely managing delivery
- Strong understanding of modern engineering practices, testing, observability and resilience
- Strong stakeholder and communication skills
- Experience working in Agile engineering environments
