Hardware Engineer
Description
MTData is looking for a practical, curious Hardware Engineer who enjoys working across electronics, embedded firmware and production systems rather than being confined to one narrow specialty.
The opportunity
This is a broad, hands-on engineering role where your work could include refining a PCB layout, developing microcontroller firmware, debugging an embedded Linux peripheral, extending a production test suite or investigating a field fault.
You’ll take ownership across the full product lifecycle, from initial concepts and schematics through to production testing, field support and end-of-life planning. You’ll work closely with the Senior Hardware Engineer and report to the Engineering Manager.
What you’ll be doing
lntegration and device trees
Designing analogue, power supply, protection and signal-conditioning circuits
Selecting components and managing bills of materials and supplier requirements
Applying design-for-manufacture and design-for-test principles
Building automated production test jigs and maintaining Python-based test systems
Designing schematics and multilayer PCBs using Altium Designer
Developing embedded firmware in C for ARM Cortex-M microcontrollers
Working with embedded Linux platforms, periphera
Prototyping, assembling and characterising hardware
Conducting structured root-cause analysis of production and field faults
Supporting PCB assembly reviews, production yields and manufacturing processes
What you’ll bring
A degree in Electrical Engineering, Electronic Engineering, Mechatronics or an equivalent discipline
Commercial experience in hardware engineering
Hands-on PCB design experience using Altium Designer
Embedded firmware development experience in C on ARM microcontrollers
Familiarity with embedded Linux, including peripheral integration and device trees
Python experience for test automation, tooling or data processing
Confidence using oscilloscopes, digital multimeters and logic analysers
A methodical approach to component-level fault-finding
The ability to clearly document technical findings, procedures and design decisions
It would be an advantage if you have experience with
Production test jigs or hardware-in-the-loop testing
Linux kernel drivers
Switch-mode power supplies, battery management or protection circuits
Automotive or commercial vehicle electrical systems
CAN, J1939 or ISO 7637
NVIDIA Jetson or similar compute-on-module platforms
FPGA or CPLD design
EMC design and pre-compliance testing
LTSpice or similar circuit simulation tools
About you
You enjoy following a problem across the boundary between hardware and software. You’re equally comfortable working in a design tool, using a soldering iron or tracing an issue with an oscilloscope.
You take ownership, work well with autonomy and document your decisions clearly. Most importantly, you’re motivated by seeing your designs work reliably in production and in the field.
Apply now
If you’re looking for a varied hardware engineering role where you can remain close to the product throughout its lifecycle, apply now.
