Hardware Systems Lead Drone
Summary
Hands-on hardware lead for Applied Intuition's drone platforms in Sunnyvale: architect, build, integrate, and test mechanical and electrical aircraft systems, run environmental and flight testing, optimize SWaP tradeoffs, and drive failure analysis across airframes, avionics, power, and sensor/compute integration.
You will serve as the hands-on hardware technical authority for drone platforms. You will architect, build, integrate, debug, and test mechanical and electrical systems, lead environmental and flight testing, optimize SWaP tradeoffs, and resolve hardware failures.
Responsibilities
- Own end-to-end mechanical and electrical hardware architecture for drone platforms
- Prototype, build, integrate, debug, and test aircraft hardware
- Define survivability requirements for sensors, compute, avionics, harnesses, connectors, and enclosures
- Integrate sensors, compute, power systems, communications, and flight controllers onto airframes
- Manage size, weight, and power tradeoffs
- Define hardware requirements and reference architectures
- Plan and conduct environmental, durability, and flight testing
- Analyze failures and crashes and drive design fixes
- Lead hardware design reviews and mentor engineers
- Support flight tests, demonstrations, and field operations
Requirements
- BS or MS in Aerospace, Mechanical, Electrical, Mechatronics, or a related field
- 10+ years of hands-on hardware engineering experience on drones, UAS, or aircraft
- Experience with airframes, structures, electrical architecture, power distribution, harness design, and avionics
- Experience with vibration, shock, ingress protection, thermal management, and EMI/EMC
- Experience building prototypes, debugging systems, running flight tests, and diagnosing failures
- Experience integrating cameras, lidar, radar, GNSS/IMU, compute, and flight-control hardware
- Experience with SWaP optimization, lightweight design, composites, and carbon fiber
- Experience with reliability and qualification testing
- Experience designing for manufacturability and field serviceability
