Head of Data Engineering

Summary

Lead the design and build of a modern, scalable data platform for a biotech company using AWS and Databricks, enabling scientists and teams to access and analyze data for drug discovery.

Join Gubra and shape the future of data-driven drug discovery

At Gubra, we are building the digital foundation that powers scientific innovation. We are looking for a hands‑on Head of Data Engineering to lead the implementation of a unified Gubra Data Platform that connects scientific, operational, and business data across the organization.

This is a unique opportunity to combine strategic leadership with hands‑on technical impact. You will define the future data architecture at Gubra, guide a talented team of data engineers, and help transform how scientists and business teams access and use data to accelerate discovery and decision‑making.

About the role

As Head of Data Engineering, you will lead the design and implementation of a modern, scalable data platform supporting research, laboratory operations, machine learning, and selected business functions such as HR and Finance. You will work closely with scientists, engineers, business stakeholders, and leadership teams to ensure data becomes a strategic asset across Gubra.

This is a leadership role with a strong technical focus. Success requires the ability to move seamlessly between stakeholder engagement, technical decision‑making, architecture reviews, roadmap planning, and hands‑on execution when needed.

Your key responsibilities will include:

  • Lead the implementation of Gubra's enterprise data platform from design through delivery.
  • Define technical architecture and strategic direction for a hybrid cloud environment.
  • Build scalable and secure data solutions using AWS and Databricks.
  • Develop reliable data pipelines and reusable data products for scientists, ML teams, engineers, and business users.
  • Establish standards for data governance, access control, documentation, security, and operational excellence.
  • Partner with stakeholders across research, laboratory operations, computational drug discovery, software engineering, HR, and Finance.
  • Own roadmap planning, prioritization, stakeholder management, and delivery execution.
  • Build, mentor, and develop a high‑performing data engineering team.
  • Stay hands‑on with technical design reviews, troubleshooting, and critical implementation activities.

What we are looking for

We imagine that you bring:

  • Extensive hands‑on experience with AWS and Databricks.
  • A strong background leading data engineering, analytics, or data platform initiatives.
  • Expertise in Python, SQL, Spark, data pipelines, and cloud‑based data architectures.
  • Experience designing scalable, secure, and governed data solutions.
  • Strong stakeholder management skills and the ability to collaborate across technical and non‑technical functions.
  • A pragmatic and solutions‑oriented mindset with the ability to balance strategic thinking and execution.

It would be an advantage if you also have

  • Experience from biotech, pharma, life sciences, CRO, or research‑intensive environments.
  • Knowledge of scientific data domains such as ELN, LIMS, imaging, omics, and laboratory systems.
  • Experience with modern data architecture concepts including lakehouse architecture, data mesh, and medallion design.
  • Familiarity with technologies such as Airflow, dbt, Terraform, Delta Lake, and Unity Catalog.
  • Understanding of regulated environments and GxP requirements.

Who you are

You are a technically strong leader who enjoys building both solutions and teams. You can create a clear vision, align stakeholders around priorities, and drive delivery while maintaining credibility through your technical expertise.

You thrive in a collaborative and fast‑moving environment where ownership, curiosity, and continuous improvement are valued. Most importantly, you are motivated by the opportunity to enable better science through better data.

Application and deadline

Please apply no later than August 2, 2026 by uploading your motivated cover letter, resumé, and relevant diplomas on our website.

Any questions about the position will be answered during the interview process.

We are looking forward to receiving your application.
