Summary
Leadership role owning data engineering strategy, architecture and delivery at an established organisation modernising its Azure/Microsoft Fabric data platform. Day to day: leading a small internal engineering team, managing an external consultancy, and translating business priorities into technical direction.
Head of Data Engineering – Microsoft Fabric
We're recruiting a Head of Data Engineering for a well-established, profitable organisation investing in the modernisation of its data platform.
This is a business-facing leadership role combining data strategy, technical oversight and delivery management. You'll lead a small internal engineering team and manage an external consultancy responsible for much of the platform delivery.
We're looking for someone with strong technical credibility who can also engage confidently with senior business stakeholders, understand commercial priorities and ensure technology delivers real business value.
Key Responsibilities
- Own the data engineering strategy, architecture and delivery roadmap.
- Manage the external consultancy, setting clear priorities, milestones and expectations while holding them accountable for delivery.
- Work closely with senior business stakeholders, translating commercial and operational requirements into technical priorities.
- Oversee the development and modernisation of the Azure / Microsoft Fabric data platform.
- Lead, coach and develop the internal engineering team.
- Establish engineering standards, governance and effective delivery processes.
- Challenge technical decisions and ensure solutions are commercially appropriate, scalable and cost-effective.
What We're Looking For
- Proven leadership experience within Data Engineering or Data Platforms.
- Microsoft Fabric experience – highly desirable.
- Experience managing external consultancies or outsourced technology delivery.
- Strong business-facing and stakeholder management skills, including engagement with senior non-technical leaders.
- A commercial mindset, able to connect data strategy with business priorities and outcomes.
- Strong architectural understanding without becoming overly focused on hands-on technical detail.
- Experience coaching engineers and improving team performance.
The Opportunity
You'll have genuine ownership of the data engineering strategy, significant influence over an important platform transformation and the opportunity to develop the internal team further over time.
