Head of Design Technology

Summary

The Head of Design Technology will lead the Copenhagen team in integrating AI, BIM, and computational design into architectural projects. This hands-on role involves developing custom tools, setting technical strategy, and mentoring staff to advance the firm's digital capabilities.

We are looking for a Head of Design Technology to lead and grow our Design Technology team in Copenhagen. This is a senior, hands-on leadership role: you will set the direction for design technology across the Copenhagen studio while staying deeply involved in the work itself, building tools, deploying applications, and solving real problems on live projects with real deadlines. This is a role for a leader who leads from the front, not a manager removed from the craft.

This role is part of BIG's global ambition to deepen our technological skills and become the most advanced AI-enabled architectural organization in the world. The global Design Technology department, led by the Chief Design Technology Officer, is at the core and center of that mission. As the new Head of DT Copenhagen, you will be reporting to the local leadership and the Chief Design Technology Officer[SS1.1], and be the driving force for design technology locally, uniting BIM, computational design, AI, Sustainability, Model Shop and visualization into one coherent practice and making sure new methods actually land in project teams.

We are looking for a rare profile: someone who combines deep architectural experience across all its stages, genuine technical depth and the ability to lead and communicate across multiple organizational tiers. You are equally comfortable writing code and shaping strategy, and you can navigate the complexity of driving change in a large creative studio. Fluency with AI is essential. You should be hands-on with how AI is reshaping the way we design and build, and able to turn it into practical value for project teams[SS2.1]. As part of this, culture and change management are essential skills to thrive in this position.

Main Responsibilities
  • Lead, mentor, and grow BIG’s Copenhagen Design Technology team, setting direction across BIM, computational design, AI, Sustainability, Model Shop [SS3.1]and Visualization and manage day-to-day leadership of the department leads.
  • Define and drive the local design technology roadmap, aligned with BIG’s global Design Technology strategy and the studio’s project priorities.
  • Champion the practical adoption of AI across the studio, evaluating, integrating, and scaling AI tools and workflows within live BIM and computational design processes.
  • Strengthen the studio’s AI and Visualization capabilities, two key areas of growth, and building the talent and tooling to support them.
  • Stay hands-on: develop and review custom tools, scripts, and plugins across Rhino, Grasshopper, Revit, and related platforms, and contribute directly to complex or high-priority deliverables.[SS4.1]
  • Work with the office BIM Manager to establish and evolve standards, templates, and digital assets, and ensure robust interoperability between design and BIM environments (e.g. Rhino.Inside.Revit and IFC-based exchanges).
  • Lead the process to embed new methods and workflows into the projects, providing direct technical support on high-priority and complex work.
  • Collaborate with the global Design Technology team to align workflows, share tools, and contribute to firm-wide standards.
  • Lead the Copenhagen Model Shop and Sustainability teams, with scope for the role to grow across these areas over time.
  • Plan resourcing, prioritize across multiple projects, and represent design technology in studio decision-making.

Required Skills & Experience
  • 10+ years of professional experience in design technology, computational design, or a related technical field, including experience leading or mentoring a team.Proven ability to lead and drive change in a large, fast-paced creative or technical environment, a doer who leads from the front.
  • Strong proficiency in Rhino, Grasshopper, and scripting with Python and/or C#.
  • Experience with version control (Git) and structured development and deployment practices.
  • Experience with cloud platforms, APIs, or web-based tool development.
  • Solid command of Revit and BIM workflows, including experience with Rhino.Inside.Revit, Dynamo, Speckle, or similar interoperability tools.
  • Hands-on experience evaluating, deploying, and scaling AI tools and platforms within a design or AEC context.
  • Strong understanding of computational geometry, data structures, and parametric modeling.
  • Excellent communication and project management skills[SS5.1], with the ability to influence designers, engineers, and leadership alike.
  • Background in architecture or a design discipline, with firsthand understanding of how buildings are designed and delivered through all phases of a project.
  • Excellent command of English, both written and spoken.

Nice to Have
  • Experience setting Design Technology strategies or standards across a multi-office or international organization, particularly where shaped by new AI methods.
  • Familiarity with machine learning frameworks, generative design, or data analytics.
  • Experience with real-time visualization tools such as Unreal Engine, Twinmotion, or Enscape.

  • BIG Offers
Strong culture of creative minds and experience in the built environment.
  • Diverse group of people with many different nationalities.
  • Salary scheme based on experience and qualifications.
