We are looking to hire a Head of DevOps to build and lead our Platform as a Service Chapter, a team that overtime will grow to 5-10 DevOps and hosting engineers. You will own our private cloud infrastructure as a product and turn it into a set of secure, self-service CI/CD and hosting services that our development teams can call on demand, so that increasing storage or standing up a new server is a service request rather than a project. We are searching for an open-minded leader who is technical enough to challenge an architecture and set engineering standards, but whose day job is building the team, defining the service catalogue and being accountable for what the platform delivers.
Responsibilities:
Build and lead the Platform as a Service Chapter, overtime grow it to a team of 5-10 DevOps and hosting engineers;
Own our private cloud infrastructure as a product, setting the technical direction and the roadmap for how it evolves;
Define and publish a service catalogue with clear ownership and clear interfaces, so that provisioning compute, storage, environments and infrastructure is a self-service call for our development teams;
Deliver secure CI/CD as a service, with pipelines, secrets management, access control and compliance controls built into the platform by default rather than added afterwards;
Set, measure and report on SLAs, capacity plans and cost transparency for every service the chapter provides;
Establish the engineering standards of the chapter, including infrastructure as code, peer review, automated testing and observability, and hold the team to them;
Embed AI-assisted engineering in how the chapter works day to day, and measure the effect it has on delivery speed and quality;
Partner with development, architecture and security so that platform capabilities match what our product teams need;
Take accountability for the reliability of the platform, including on-call arrangements, incident response, and post-incident learning.
Requirements:
Proven experience leading a platform, infrastructure or DevOps team, including line management, hiring and developing engineers;
Track record of delivering infrastructure as a self-service product, with a defined service catalogue, agreed SLAs and users outside your own team;
Strong working knowledge of containers, Kubernetes and Helm, and of the operational reality of running them at scale;
Experience with CI/CD automation, infrastructure as code, and with the security controls that belong inside a pipeline
Familiarity with clusters such as Redis, Kafka and Elasticsearch, and with configuration management (Ansible or similar);
Experience with infrastructure provisioning tools (e.g. Terraform);
Experience operating on-premises or private cloud infrastructure, including capacity planning and cost management;
Comfortable in an environment where legacy software on both Linux and Windows is supported alongside a modern microservices estate;
Able to embed AI-assisted engineering into the way a team works, and to hold that team to measurable outcomes from it;
Good understanding of the software development life cycle, from planning to deployment, able to identify bottlenecks across teams and come up with solutions to them.
Nice to have:
Experience with observability, built into a platform as a default rather than as an add-on;
Experience with a legacy monolith application being migrated to a microservices architecture on on-prem infrastructure, and with the automation needed to make everything run smoothly;
Exposure to a regulated industry, where auditability and access control are part of the design;
The person needs to be open-minded and proactive, willing to test and learn new things all the time, and comfortable leading a team through change.
