Head of Software Engineering
Summary
Leads the end-to-end engineering function at SOPHiA CRE, an AI-native commercial real estate platform, managing and mentoring a small distributed team while staying hands-on with architecture, code reviews, and delivery of LLM/agent-based features and integrations on cloud infrastructure (Python/TypeScript, Node.js, React, AWS/Azure/GCP). US remote role.
Company Description SOPHiA CRE is an AI-native commercial real estate operating system designed to help firms complete more deals with their existing teams by automating slow, repetitive work. Built by a real estate operator with over 25 years of industry experience, SOPHiA CRE focuses on streamlining workflows, reducing errors, and unlocking significant productivity and financial gains. The platform custom-builds AI Co-Workers around how each firm operates and ensures high-quality outputs through a proprietary AI Synchronization Model™. Teams are trained first so AI adoption is effective and sustainable, and results are tracked through Mission Control with clear visibility into time and cost savings. SOPHiA CRE enables firms to learn, automate, and scale without adding headcount.
Role Description The Head of Software Engineering will lead the end-to-end engineering function for SOPHiA CRE, overseeing the design, development, and delivery of the AI-native operating system. This full-time, remote role involving managing and mentoring engineering teams, setting technical direction, and ensuring robust, scalable, and secure software solutions aligned with business goals. Day-to-day responsibilities include defining and refining architecture, supervising implementation of new features and integrations, establishing engineering best practices, and collaborating closely with product, data science, and commercial real estate operations teams. The Head of Software Engineering will also drive project planning, prioritization, and execution, monitor performance and reliability of production systems, and continuously improve development processes and tooling. The role requires a hands-on technical leadership approach, balancing strategic vision with active participation in code reviews, technical decision-making, and problem-solving.
Qualifications
- Demonstrated expertise in Software Development, including designing, building, and maintaining complex, cloud-based applications, ideally in AI or data-intensive environments.
- Strong Team Management and Team Leadership capabilities, with experience hiring, mentoring, and developing diverse engineering teams and fostering a collaborative, high-performance culture.
- Proven Project Management skills, including planning, coordinating cross-functional initiatives, managing timelines and resources, and delivering high-quality releases on schedule.
- Deep understanding of Enterprise Architecture, with the ability to define scalable system architectures, integration patterns, and technical standards for mission-critical platforms.
- Advanced proficiency in modern programming languages and frameworks (e.g., Python, TypeScript/JavaScript, Node.js, React, or similar), and experience with cloud platforms (e.g., AWS, Azure, or GCP).
- Experience building or integrating AI/ML-driven solutions, data pipelines, and APIs, with attention to reliability, security, and governance.
- Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills, capable of translating complex technical concepts into clear, actionable information for non-technical partners.
How Success Is Measured
Targets are set with the COO (and later the President). Directionally, we care about:
1. Reusable vs. one-off — share of new deployments built from reusable capability rather than custom work
2. Time to value & reliability — how fast a new client's first AI Co-Worker goes live, plus platform uptime
3. Multi-tenant readiness — isolation, identity, audit, connectors, and a governed deploy path live in production at the scale the business needs
Who You Are
Must-haves
· Hands-on builder who has scaled a B2B SaaS or AI platform from early product to multi-customer production—and still writes and reviews code
· Production LLM / agent experience: orchestration, tool use, retrieval, evaluations, guardrails, shipped to real users (not demos)
· Integration at scale: APIs and connectors into messy enterprise systems; multi-tenant architecture, identity, and permissions
· Has hired and led a small engineering team (in-house and distributed) and grown it as demand rose
· Security-minded with high-trust professional data: access control, secrets, audit trails, safe failure modes
· Clear with executives and clients; calm in ambiguity; United States remote, with occasional client travel
How you think
· Scale what works before inventing what's new; buy, reuse, or configure before you build
· Prototype-vs-production honesty—you name demo, pilot, and production without spin
· Customer impact over architecture elegance; founder-level ownership
Nice to have
· Commercial real estate or proptech experience is a bonus, not required—domain context comes from our field and subject-matter experts
· Vertical SaaS in another high-trust field (finance, legal, healthcare operations)
· Workflow automation, knowledge/data catalog, or ontology work
What This Is Not
Not a research lab · not a pure people-manager who stopped coding · not product priority-setting · not client delivery · not the security program owner · not joining a large engineering org to maintain it
