Health and Safety Manager

Help keep our people and patients safe, in clinics across Aotearoa.

Tend and The Doctors run medical centres from Te Ika-a-Māui to Te Waipounamu. We're looking for a Health and Safety Manager to lead how we manage health and safety across the network. You'll be our lead advisor on the topic, and you'll turn policy into practice that staff, patients and visitors can rely on.

This is a hands-on, visible role. You'll spend time in our clinics with Medical Centre Managers, GP Leads and Nurse Leads. You'll help them manage risk well on site, and you'll make sure our Health and Safety Governance Group, Executive and Board have the information and assurance they need to meet their duties under the Health and Safety at Work Act 2015.

What you'll do

  • Own and develop our health and safety management system, including incident reporting, corrective actions, audits and risk registers

  • Lead risk management and investigations, set standards for areas like security, de-escalation and lone working, and make sure notifiable events are escalated and reported to WorkSafe NZ

  • Run a risk-based programme of site inspections and audits, and support clinics with Foundation Standard and Cornerstone accreditation

  • Prepare monthly reporting for the Governance Group and Board that gives insight and recommendations, not just data

  • Work with our Property team and landlords on shared duties, fitouts and emergency planning, and manage contractor processes

  • Run the Health and Safety Team Engagement Forum and build capability in clinic leadership teams

  • Promote a speak-up culture, and apply an equity lens and the principles of Te Tiriti o Waitangi to everything you do

What you'll bring

  • A NZ Diploma in Workplace Health and Safety Management (Level 6), NEBOSH or a related degree, plus NZISM membership or eligibility

  • Significant health and safety advisory or management experience, ideally across multiple sites

  • Experience in implementing & running a health and safety management system, leading audits and investigations, and reporting to senior leaders or a board

  • Strong knowledge of the Health and Safety at Work Act 2015 and the judgement to apply it practically in a clinical setting

  • Credibility with clinicians, managers and executives, and the confidence to challenge constructively

  • Clear, plain-language communication and the ability to turn data into recommendations

  • Good organisation, the ability to work independently across many sites, and a full NZ driver's licence

  • Experience in compliance, quality or ISO areas is a bonus
