Health Information Systems Engineer
Perron Institute For Neurological and Translational Science Health Information Systems Engineer
Description
About the role
This is an exciting opportunity for a health data and digital systems professional who enjoys solving problems, improving processes and turning ideas into practical digital solutions. As our Health Information Systems Engineer, you'll support, enhance and integrate our current and future information systems and data pipelines, with appropriate security and governance. Working closely with clinical, research and program teams, you'll help streamline the way clinical and research information is captured, managed and used—making systems smarter, more efficient and easier for our teams to work with.
Key responsibilities
Collaborate with the program team and stakeholders to design, develop, test and deploy digital solutions, ensuring timely delivery and continuous improvement of data flows, systems and assets.
Engage with clinical and research teams to understand business requirements and translate them into practical, scalable technical solutions that streamline clinical and research data capture, management and reuse.
Support, maintain and enhance our REDCap projects and other central data capture systems, including instruments, data dictionaries, workflows, external modules, custom hooks, API tokens, user access and version upgrades, with accompanying documentation adhering to data management standards and regulations.
Support and troubleshoot existing data flows and integrations, including scheduled imports and exports, API connections and reporting extracts, to keep data accurate, timely and reliable.
Develop a working understanding of practice management software and how it can be modified or linked with other systems to reduce duplicate data entry, manual processes and data quality gaps.
Contribute to the design and maintenance of a common, standards-based clinical data model that delivers research-ready data generated as a by-product of routine care, supporting potential future transition of clinical information to new digital health platforms.
Assess the feasibility of, and implement, system configurations, data workflows, automation and integrations, including API connectivity, to build unified clinical and research data pipelines and improve interoperability, research capability and operational efficiency.
Support data quality, integrity, consistency and accessibility through the implementation of appropriate validation, monitoring and data management practices.
Ensure appropriate licences, permissions and approvals are obtained and maintained for software applications, validated tools, modules and system integrations.
Provide technical support, guidance and training to users in the operation, administration and configuration of information systems, including effective data capture, extraction, export and preparation for reporting and analysis.
About you
A Bachelor's degree in Data Science, Computer Science, Health Informatics or a related discipline.
Demonstrated experience with low-code platforms for electronic data capture and information management (e.g. REDCap), ideally in a health or clinical research setting.
Experience customising and extending low-code platforms, including developing and configuring PHP-based external modules, using hooks, managing API tokens and applying system upgrades.
Experience developing digital solutions that support business processes, data capture, information management and systems integration.
Experience building and supporting data flows and integrations between systems, including the use of APIs, to connect clinical and research data sources.
Strong analytical skills, with the ability to investigate existing systems and workflows, identify problems and recommend practical solutions.
Experience translating business requirements into technical solutions.
Understanding of data security, privacy and governance requirements for personal health and research information, including consent and ethics considerations.
Strong communication skills and the ability to work collaboratively with people from clinical, research and technical backgrounds.
